Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and by nursing mothers. Patients with gastrointestinal issues such as gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation should also avoid this drug. It should not be administered to patients who may have hypertension due to certain tumors, or those with an allergy or severe intolerance to this medication. Patients with liver disease or in the manic phase of bipolar disorder, as well as those with breast-related conditions, should also refrain from using this drug. Additionally, this medication contains lactose and should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. Caution should be exercised when administering this drug to patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly. Dosage adjustment is especially important for children as they may experience side effects more easily. While taking this medication, monitor for possible hormone-related side effects such as amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, and gynecomastia. Rarely, neurological side effects such as tremors, abnormal movements of the tongue, and agitation may occur; if these symptoms appear, discontinue the medication immediately. Long-term use may lead to involuntary movements around the mouth, as well as gastrointestinal issues such as dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardiac side effects such as hypertension or arrhythmia have been reported rarely, and a serious condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may also occur, requiring immediate treatment upon symptom onset. Other potential side effects include skin rashes or swelling, insomnia, dizziness, erectile dysfunction, and various other reactions. During the course of taking this medication, it is advisable to avoid activities requiring concentration, such as driving or operating machinery. Moreover, interactions may occur if combined with other medications; caution is especially advised when used alongside anticholinergics, analgesics, digitalis preparations, other antipsychotic medications, and alcohol. Concurrent use with drugs that may affect the heart can increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmia; caution should be exercised and combinations with drugs causing electrolyte imbalance should be avoided. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this medication, and the elderly should adjust dosage and intervals due to possible prolonged retention of the drug in the body owing to decreased kidney function. Lastly, since this medication has an action to suppress vomiting, it may mask vomiting symptoms from other causes, so caution is warranted. Reproductive function decrease and tumor risk have been reported in animal studies, so exercise caution with long-term use.
