How to take

Adult dose

Adults: The usual dose is 25-400㎍ of levothyroxine sodium orally once daily. The usual initial dose is 25-100㎍, and the maintenance dose is 100-400㎍. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication is a thyroid hormone and is not appropriate for individuals with normal thyroid function to use alone or in combination with other medications for weight loss, as it is ineffective. In particular, taking it alongside sympathomimetic agents that suppress appetite can lead to life-threatening severe side effects. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain heart diseases, hyperthyroidism, adrenal insufficiency, or individuals who are hypersensitive to this drug or have genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Patients with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, elderly individuals, and patients with severe hypothyroidism should use this medication cautiously, starting with a low dose and gradually increasing. Additionally, this medication contains a dye called Yellow No. 4, which requires caution in hypersensitive patients. Overdose may lead to various side effects including abnormal heart rhythms, insomnia, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and skin flushing; therefore, if any symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Liver function impairment may occur, so dose adjustments or discontinuation may be necessary if liver function tests show abnormalities. This medication can interact with various drugs, so caution is needed when combined with anticoagulants, sympathomimetics, cardiac glycosides, antidiabetic agents, antacids, anticonvulsants, estrogen preparations, etc., and dose adjustments and monitoring may be required if necessary. Treatment should not be interrupted during pregnancy, and caution should be exercised during breastfeeding. In children, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as excessive treatment can affect growth, necessitating appropriate dose adjustments. Elderly patients should start with a low dose and gradually increase it due to decreased physical function, which may increase cardiac burden. This medication may affect thyroid function test results; it is important to inform the healthcare professional about any medications being taken before the tests. In case of overdose, appropriate emergency measures such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, and administering antidotes are needed, along with treatment for cardiac and mental symptoms. Lastly, caution is needed as severe cardiac side effects may rarely occur when taking this medication along with similar drugs.
