Prevention of vitamin C deficiency and treatment of scurvy, improvement of capillary bleeding and bone union.
This medication is used for the prevention and treatment of scurvy, which is caused by vitamin C deficiency, particularly in acute situations or when oral administration is not possible. It is also beneficial for pregnant or breastfeeding women and individuals engaged in severe physical labor, where the need for vitamin C is increased. It can be useful in situations where capillary bleeding or vitamin C metabolic disturbances due to drug administration are suspected, and in promoting osseous tissue formation and bone union in fracture cases. It is also used to improve skin conditions like melasma, freckles, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and photosensitive dermatitis. Thus, it effectively addresses issues related to vitamin C deficiency in various situations.
As ascorbic acid, administer 50–1,000 mg once or in divided doses subcutaneously, intramuscularly, or intravenously per day. Adjust as appropriate based on age and symptoms.
This medication contains sodium bisulfite, so individuals allergic to sulfites should use it with caution. Asthma patients, in particular, may be more sensitive to sulfites, so administration should be done carefully. It should not be used in patients with certain conditions. For instance, those allergic to this medication or its components, patients with hyperoxaluria or Mediterranean anemia, those with gout or cystinuria, and patients with G6PD deficiency should not use this medication. Furthermore, patients with oxalate kidney stones should not exceed a dosage of 1 gram per day. While using this medication, side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, headache, and insomnia may occur. Notably, exceeding a daily dose of 1 gram may increase the risk of diarrhea or kidney stones, and doses above 600 milligrams may lead to diuretic effects. Caution is necessary as hemolytic phenomena may occur in patients with G6PD deficiency. Excessive dosing can lead to the deposition of oxalates or other substances in the urinary tract, causing stones, so proper dosing is essential. This medication is usually taken orally; however, injections are used only in acute situations or when oral administration is difficult, and it is advisable to switch to oral administration as soon as possible. This medication may interact with other drugs, so caution is advised when taken with aspirin, alcohol, certain antibiotics or anticonvulsants, and oral contraceptives. During pregnancy, the effects on the fetus are unclear, so it should only be administered when necessary, and high doses should be avoided. Although this medication is also present in breast milk, it is not harmful to the baby at typical dosing. This medication may affect some clinical test results; thus, it should be noted during testing. Overdosing may lead to increased risks of diarrhea and kidney stones, as well as diuretic effects, so immediate discontinuation and treatment are necessary if symptoms occur. When used as an injection, there may be pain at the injection site, so the injection method and location should be chosen carefully. Intravenous injections should be administered slowly to reduce dizziness or vascular pain.
Severe allergic reactions due to sulfite anaphylaxis, asthma attacks, hemolysis, increased risk of kidney stones.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, temporary mild pain at the injection site, dizziness, vascular pain.
