Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to treat hypertension. It specifically helps reduce the risk of kidney damage in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes. This role effectively controls blood pressure and protects kidney function. It is an important therapeutic option for improving patient health.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals; however, it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. The initial and maintenance dose for adults with hypertension is 50 mg orally once daily as losartan potassium, with maximum effect occurring within 3-6 weeks after treatment initiation. If the effect is inadequate, the dose can be increased to 100 mg once daily or divided into two doses. For patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes,

This medication can cause severe harm to the fetus when taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be stopped immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Taking this medicine during pregnancy can lead to serious side effects such as reduced lung development in the fetus, skeletal deformities, decreased cranial formation, and decreased kidney function. Women who may become pregnant should not take this medication, and those planning to become pregnant should consult a doctor. Avoid this medication if there is an allergic reaction to it or serious liver impairment. Moreover, patients with hereditary angioedema or a history of angioedema, as well as those with primary hyperaldosteronism, should not use this medication. This medicine is not administered to patients with genetic problems that inhibit the breakdown of lactose. Patients with moderate to severe diabetes or renal impairment should avoid concomitant use of this medication with certain drugs. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, and those with liver impairment should use this medication with caution; patients with valvular heart disease or ischemic heart disease also require careful attention. Patients with decreased blood volume or renal artery stenosis should be closely monitored when using this medication. This medication is generally safe; however, side effects such as muscle cramps, dizziness, and upper respiratory infections may occur. Rarely, serious side effects such as angioedema, hepatitis, myalgia, and hyperkalemia have been reported; if any abnormal symptoms occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. It is important to regularly check blood pressure, kidney function, and blood electrolyte levels while on this medication. Particularly due to the risk of hyperkalemia, potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes should not be taken together. This medication can interact with some drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Lactating women should avoid taking this medication or discontinue breastfeeding, and this medication should not be given to children under 6 years old. In cases of overdose, hypotension and bradycardia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention; this drug is not removed by dialysis. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur during this medication, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Store this medication in a tightly closed container away from air or moisture, and do not transfer to other containers.
