This medicine is used for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and angina.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Hypertension: Adults should take 50 mg of atenolol once daily, alone or in combination with a diuretic, and if no effect is seen within 1-2 weeks, increase to 100 mg once daily. Do not exceed 100 mg per day. Angina: 100 mg daily is divided into 1-2 doses, and do not exceed 100 mg per day. Patients with renal impairment: When creatinine clearance is 15-35 ml/min/1.73㎡, 50 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medicine should not be used in certain patients. Patients with allergies to the active ingredient or excipients, severe bronchial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetic ketoacidosis or metabolic acidosis, patients with very slow heart rate (bradycardia), patients with cardiac conduction disorders, patients with cardiogenic shock, right heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure patients, patients with severe hypotension, patients with severe peripheral circulation disorders, patients with dysfunctional syndromes, patients who may develop thyroid storm due to thyroid dysfunction, and untreated pheochromocytoma patients should not take this medicine. This medicine should be used with caution in certain patients. Patients with bronchial asthma or potential bronchospasm, patients who may have congestive heart failure, patients with difficult-to-control diabetes or frequent hypoglycemia, patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, patients with pheochromocytoma, and the elderly should be closely monitored and the dosage adjusted if necessary. This medicine may have several side effects. Allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, and hives may occur, so discontinue use immediately if symptoms appear. Eye-related symptoms such as decreased tear secretion, blurred vision, and dry eyes may also occur. Bradycardia, hypotension, palpitations, symptoms of heart failure, cold extremities, confusion, dizziness, insomnia, drowsiness, and headaches have also been reported. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation may occur. Respiratory difficulties, wheezing, and bronchospasm may rarely occur. Various abnormal reactions including liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, hair loss, blood disorders, and erectile dysfunction have been reported, so consult a healthcare provider if any abnormal symptoms appear. Regular checks on heart function, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram should be conducted during long-term use of this medicine. Especially if the heart rate slows down significantly or blood pressure drops dangerously low, the dosage should be reduced or the medication discontinued. Furthermore, abruptly stopping the medication can worsen heart disease symptoms, so the dosage should be gradually decreased according to a doctor's instructions. While taking this medication, dizziness may occur, so caution should be taken when driving or operating dangerous machinery. This medicine may interact with other drugs, so if taking other medications, it is essential to inform healthcare providers. Particular caution is needed when used with antihypertensives, diabetes medications, calcium channel blockers, anesthetics, antiarrhythmics, etc. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medicine. This medication crosses the placenta and may affect the fetus, and during breastfeeding, the drug may be transmitted through breast milk, so it is advisable to either stop breastfeeding or avoid taking the medication. The safety in children has not been sufficiently confirmed, so caution should be exercised when used in pediatric patients. Elderly patients should start with a low dose and adjust the dosage slowly while monitoring their condition. In case of overdose, symptoms such as reduced heart rate, heart failure, hypotension, bronchospasm, and hypoglycemia may occur, and immediate treatment should be obtained from a medical institution.
