Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with gastrointestinal obstruction as it may cause issues due to improper excretion of the drug. It should be used cautiously in patients with gastrointestinal ulcers or esophageal varices since the drug may irritate the affected areas as it passes through the gastrointestinal tract in solid form. Caution is also required for patients prone to constipation, as this medication may exacerbate constipation, and there is a potential increase in blood ammonia levels in patients with liver dysfunction. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal bloating may occur during the use of this medication. If symptoms are severe, measures such as discontinuing or reducing the medication dosage may be necessary. There have also been reports of side effects such as constipation, abdominal bloating, indigestion, headache, and skin rash with long-term use. In patients with progressive chronic kidney disease, serum creatinine levels should be checked before administration, and caution should be exercised if renal function is moderately or severely impaired. During medication use, serum creatinine levels and changes in symptoms of uremia should be monitored periodically. If no effect is observed after about 6 months of administration, discontinuation or consideration of alternative therapies should be evaluated. Due to its adsorbent properties, it is advisable not to take this medication with other drugs, as it may reduce the effects of those medications. The safety of this drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been sufficiently established, so it should only be used when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. Safety has not been established in children, especially premature infants, neonates, and young children, so caution is advised in use. Elderly patients may experience more side effects due to decreased bodily functions, so special care is necessary when using this medication.
