This medication is used to prevent and treat various anemias and nutritional deficiency states due to folic acid deficiency. It is particularly helpful for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and patients with wasting diseases when there is a lack of folic acid intake. It also improves nutritional absorption disorders caused by malabsorption syndrome and is used as an adjunct in the treatment of several types of anemia other than pernicious anemia. It is effective for anemia caused by the use of anticonvulsants or antimalarials, as well as anemias related to alcohol dependence and liver disease. It is an important supplement that also helps with aplastic anemia and neutropenia. Therefore, this medication is used to improve anemia and nutritional deficiencies caused by various factors.

Precautions

This medicine should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or any of its ingredients. It should also not be administered to patients with pernicious anemia or megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency. This medication contains lactose; therefore, patients with genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, and glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use it. Patients receiving medical treatment or those with pernicious anemia should use this medication with caution. In particular, while patients with pernicious anemia may see improvement in blood conditions, this does not have an effect on neurological symptoms, so a vitamin B12 preparation should be taken concurrently. If the diagnosis of pernicious anemia is uncertain, care must be taken as this medication may mask anemia symptoms and interfere with diagnosis or treatment. During treatment with this medication, allergic symptoms such as skin rash, itching, and shortness of breath may occur, and if these symptoms appear, one should consult medical personnel immediately. Adverse effects such as decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, edema, and weight loss may occur, so it is important to monitor the condition closely. In the case of high-dose use, gastrointestinal disturbances or central nervous system symptoms such as changes in sleep, reduced concentration, irritability, depression, and confusion may occur, so caution is advised. If no effect is observed, long-term use should be avoided, and it is better not to use for more than one month if folic acid deficiency or metabolic disorders are suspected. This drug may interact with other medications; therefore, if taking drugs such as aminosalicylic acid, oral contraceptives, or methotrexate, one must inform medical personnel. In particular, caution is needed as co-administration with phenytoin may increase seizure frequency. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Transferring the medication from its original container to another can lead to quality deterioration or misuse, so it must be stored in the original container with the lid tightly closed.
