This medication is used for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency in acute situations or when oral administration is impossible. It is particularly effective for diseases caused by vitamin C deficiency, such as scurvy. It is also helpful in cases where the demand for vitamin C increases, such as in pregnant women, nursing mothers, and during severe physical labor. Additionally, it contributes to the improvement of symptoms such as capillary bleeding, metabolic disorders due to medication administration, formation of bone matrix and promotion of bone healing in fractures, freckles, pigmentation after inflammation, and phototoxic dermatitis. This medication is used to treat various symptoms related to vitamin C deficiency.

How it is given

Adult administration

As ascorbic acid, 50 to 1,000 mg once a day or divided into several doses by subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intravenous injection. Adjust according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should be handled very carefully when cutting the container during the use of ampoule injection, as glass fragments may mix in. Extra caution should be taken, especially when using it in children and the elderly. This medication should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to it, or in patients with oxalate nephropathy, Mediterranean anemia, gout, cystinuria, or G6PD deficiency. Patients with kidney oxalate stones should not exceed 1g per day. Side effects of this medication may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, and temporary mild pain at the injection site. Taking more than 1g per day may acidify the urine and increase the risk of diarrhea or kidney stones. Taking over 600mg may induce diuretic effects. Patients with G6PD deficiency may experience hemolysis of red blood cells with high doses of this medication. Excessive dosing may lead to the deposition of oxalates or other substances in the urinary tract, thus caution is advised. This medication is usually taken orally, but should only be injected if oral intake is difficult or there is an absorption disorder. When used with other medications, interactions may occur; therefore, it is especially important to avoid combination with salicylates, aspirin, nicotine, alcohol, iron supplements, antiepileptics, oral contraceptives, and some antibiotics. During pregnancy, the effects on the fetus are unclear, so it should only be used when necessary, and high doses should be avoided. This medication is secreted in breast milk, but at normal doses, it is not hazardous to infants. Taking this medication may affect some clinical test results, so it should be disclosed before tests. Excessive doses may lead to diarrhea and kidney stones, and diuretic effects may occur, so if symptoms appear, discontinuation and medical treatment should be sought. When used as an injection, there may be pain at the injection site, and care should be taken to avoid areas of nerve pathways and not to inject repeatedly in the same area. If there is pain or blood reflux during injection, the injection should be stopped immediately. Intravenous administration should be done slowly; if done too quickly, dizziness or vascular pain may occur. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and in a dry place, out of reach of children. In addition, the medication should not be stored outside of its original container; it must be kept in its original container with the lid tightly closed.

Possible hemolysis in patients with G6PD deficiency.

Mild side effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, fatigue, flushing, headache, insomnia, temporary mild pain at the injection site, dizziness, vascular pain.
  • In case of overdose, diuretic effects, diarrhea, increased risk of kidney stones, blood reflux, and possibility of fainting.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This medication can be sensitive to light, so it should be stored in a container that does not let light in. Furthermore, it is important to keep the medication fresh by storing it in the refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
