View approved original text

This medication helps improve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. It promotes the regression of thickened prostate tissue, facilitates urinary flow, and reduces the frequency of acute urinary retention. It also decreases the necessity for surgical procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate or radical prostatectomy. Therefore, it is used to alleviate discomfort due to prostate issues and maintain healthy urinary function.

How to take

Adult dose

As finasteride, orally administer 5 mg once daily, regardless of meals. Treatment for a minimum of 6 months is required even if symptoms improve during use.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by children or women. In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken or crushed pieces of this medication as it may harm the fetus. During the use of this medication, depression or mood changes may occur, so if these symptoms appear, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is required. Additionally, patients who are allergic to this medication or have lactose intolerance, soybean oil allergy, or allergies to beans or peanuts should not use it. Patients with poor liver function or metabolic issues with fat should use this medication cautiously. While side effects are generally mild and temporary, there may be occurrences of sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, ejaculation problems) or breast-related adverse effects. There may be an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer with long-term use, so men over the age of 55 should undergo regular check-ups while taking this medication. Moreover, this medication can affect blood lipid levels, so patients with excess fat should check their conditions through blood tests. This medication has few drug interactions, but if you are currently taking other medications, you should inform your healthcare provider. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, particularly pregnant women as it may adversely affect the fetus. The safety and efficacy in children have not been established; therefore, it should not be used in pediatric patients. Elderly patients can use it without special dosage adjustments, but if any unusual symptoms occur, they should consult their healthcare provider. This medication may lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so this should be considered when interpreting test results. There is no specific antidote for overdose, but care should be taken not to exceed the recommended dosage. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided.
