Improvement of symptoms and urination in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction in the need for surgery
This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It also reduces the enlarged prostate tissue to allow urine to flow more smoothly and decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention. This consequently reduces the likelihood of needing surgical treatments like transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. Therefore, it effectively improves symptoms and complications of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
As finasteride, take 5 mg orally once a day, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve after taking the medication, treatment for at least 6 months is necessary.
This medication should not be used by children or women. Particularly, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid touching broken or crushed tablets of this medication. This medication may cause mental health issues such as mood changes or depression, so if these symptoms occur, it is important to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Patients who are allergic to this medication or have certain genetic disorders, as well as women, children, and pregnant women should not take it. Patients with impaired liver function or allergies to the coloring agents in this medication should use it cautiously. This medication generally has few and temporary side effects, but there may be issues related to sexual function (such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders). There have been reports of an increased possibility of male breast cancer with long-term use, so caution is necessary. This medication may affect the risk of prostate cancer, so men aged 55 and older should undergo regular checks while taking it. This medication has relatively few drug interactions, but it is important to inform healthcare providers of any other medications being taken. Pregnant women should not take this medication as it may affect male fetuses. Women who could become pregnant should also avoid touching broken tablets. Safety for children has not been established, so it is not used in pediatric patients. Elderly patients can generally use this medication without special dosage adjustments, but it is advisable to consult with healthcare providers. This medication can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so care must be taken when interpreting test results. There are no specific treatments for overdose, but it is important to adhere to the recommended dosage. When storing, keep out of reach of children and store in the original container to maintain quality.
