This medication is used to replenish water and electrolytes when they are deficient, especially sodium and chloride. It is also utilized for diluting or dissolving injectable medications. This helps to balance the body and improve health.

How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, sodium chloride is administered as 20 to 1,000 mL via subcutaneous, intravenous, or rectal injection. The dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted appropriately based on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication can introduce glass particles when opening the container, so care must be taken, especially when used for children or the elderly. This medication should not be used in patients with hypernatremia, excessive body fluid, or liver cirrhosis accompanied by edema and ascites. It should be administered with caution in patients with impaired heart or circulatory function, renal problems, low protein levels in the blood, abnormal sodium or potassium levels, pulmonary edema, preeclampsia, those undergoing certain hormone therapies, as well as in children and the elderly. Administering this medication in excess or too rapidly can lead to side effects such as heart failure, edema, acidosis, and electrolyte imbalances. Infection, pain, inflammation, or thrombosis at the injection site may occur; therefore, if any abnormal symptoms arise, administration should be immediately stopped, and appropriate treatment should be sought. During the intravenous therapy period, the patient's fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base status should be regularly monitored to observe their condition closely. The plasticizer (DEHP) used in the PVC material of the container may affect genital development in animal studies, but the risk of not using this medication is greater, so there is no need for concern. Elderly patients may have decreased bodily functions, so the administration rate should be slow, and dosages adjusted; children may have reduced ability to regulate fluid and electrolytes, which requires careful monitoring of blood electrolyte levels. In particular, administering this medication during acute fluid deficiency in children may lead to hyponatremia, which can cause headaches, nausea, seizures, coma, cerebral edema, and in severe cases, death, requiring rapid emergency response. Before administration, check for discoloration, precipitates, or insoluble substances in the solution, and ensure the administration site is properly disinfected. During cold conditions, warm the medication to body temperature before use, and any remaining medication after opening or mixing with other drugs should not be reused. Finally, this medication should be infused slowly to minimize the occurrence of side effects.
