Elmiron Capsule (Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium)

Adult dosage

Take 100mg 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Undergo an examination 3 months after starting treatment. If there is no improvement and no severe adverse effects, continue taking it for another 3 months.

This medication should not be used by patients who have an allergy to its components. Patients taking this medication may experience neurological symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, depression, eye twitching, dizziness, and hyperactivity. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain, jaundice, and rarely, vomiting or oral ulcers, enteritis, esophagitis, gastritis, abdominal distention, constipation, and loss of appetite. Dermatologic symptoms may manifest as rashes, tearing, excessive sweating, itching, and hives. Hematological issues may rarely present as anemia, petechiae, prolonged coagulation time, and decreased leukocyte and platelet counts. Respiratory symptoms such as rhinitis, pharyngitis, nosebleeds, and dyspnea have been occasionally reported. Genitourinary symptoms may include vaginitis. Allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to light may rarely occur, so caution is required. Ocular symptoms such as conjunctivitis, tinnitus, optic neuritis, decreased vision, and retinal hemorrhage are rarely reported. This medication has a mild anticoagulant effect, which may increase the risk of bleeding; therefore, patients undergoing surgery or taking anticoagulants should be closely monitored for bleeding. Patients with thrombocytopenia or bleeding tendencies should consult their healthcare provider before taking this medication. Patients with liver or spleen diseases should use this medication cautiously, as its efficacy or side effects may differ. Long-term use of this medication may cause a slight increase in liver function test values, but this is usually transient. Some patients may experience changes in coagulation test values or thrombocytopenia; therefore, regular testing is necessary. Using this medication along with heparin may cause hair loss, typically presenting as patchy alopecia on the scalp. This medication suppresses certain coagulation factors in the blood to prevent thrombus formation. Patients taking this medication long-term may rarely develop a retinal disease called pigmentary maculopathy, so regular ophthalmic examinations are necessary. During pregnancy, no major issues have been found in animal studies, but safety in humans has not been fully confirmed; it should only be used when therapeutic benefits outweigh risks. It is uncertain whether this medication is excreted in breast milk; therefore, nursing women should use it cautiously. Safety and efficacy in children under 16 have not been sufficiently established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as decreased blood coagulation, bleeding, thrombocytopenia, liver dysfunction, and gastrointestinal disorders may occur, so immediate medical attention is required and gastric lavage may be necessary.

This medication should be stored in a tightly closed container that is well-ventilated, at a cool place between 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain its effectiveness and prevent deterioration.

This medication is an opaque hard capsule containing a white to pale yellowish powder.
