Summary

Main use
Treatment of inflammatory and allergic diseases, endocrine, hematologic, and neoplastic diseases, edema, and neurologic and infectious diseases
Who uses it
Adults
Adult dosage
The initial dose may vary from 4 mg to 48 mg of methylprednisolone per day, depending on the symptoms of the specific disease. For treatment of acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis, administration of 200 mg of prednisolone daily for 1 week followed by 80 mg of prednisolone every other day for 1 month is effective (4 mg of methylprednisolone is equivalent to 5 mg of prednisolone). Alternate-day therapy means administering twice the daily dose in the morning on one day out of every 2 days. The initial suppressive dose should be continued until a satisfactory clinical response is achieved, which is usually 4 to 10 days for many allergic and collagen diseases. Gradually reduce the amount of corticosteroid administered on alternate days. As disease progression is controlled, reduce the daily corticosteroid dose to the minimum effective dose as soon as possible, then switch to an alternate-day schedule. Administering 3 times or even 4 times the daily dose on alternate days is preferable to doubling the daily dose. Although a single morning dose causes considerably less adrenal suppression than taking prednisolone (10mg) in 4 divided doses every 6 hours
