Treatment of hypocalcemia (such as tetany) and improvement of magnesium toxicity
This medication is used to relieve symptoms related to tetany or associated conditions caused by hypocalcemia. It is also effective in treating magnesium toxicity. Therefore, it helps improve problems associated with calcium and magnesium imbalance.
Calcium chloride 0.4 to 1 g is administered intravenously once a day, very slowly (as calcium, 0.68 to 1.36 mEq/min). Adjust according to age and symptoms.
This medicine is an injectable solution in ampoules, so caution must be taken as glass fragments may mix when cutting the container. It is crucial to take extra care to avoid glass fragments entering during use, especially when administering to children or the elderly. Additionally, it should not be administered intravenously with the specific antibiotic ceftriaxone, as this may cause precipitation; if the same infusion device must be used, the infusion line should be cleaned thoroughly before and after administration. This medication should not be administered to certain patients, such as those taking heart medications, those with a history of hypercalcemia or kidney stones, patients with kidney diseases, and patients with heart failure. Individuals allergic to this medication or its components, and newborns should also avoid its use. Patients currently taking active vitamin D preparations or those with hyperthyroidism should exercise caution when using this medication. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, nausea, constipation, and abdominal pain may occur with this medication, and vasodilation may decrease blood pressure or cause irregular heartbeats. In cases of overdose, muscle relaxation, weight loss, myalgia, arthralgia, and edema may occur, so caution is advised. When used long-term or in children, blood and urine calcium levels should be monitored regularly; if calcium levels are elevated, administration should be stopped immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, and using it alongside heart medications, muscle relaxants, antibiotics, or uterine stimulants may result in adverse effects, so it is essential to consult with a professional. During pregnancy, the safety of this medication is uncertain, so it should only be used when necessary, and care should be taken when administering to the elderly as body functions may be compromised. This medication is for intravenous use only, and care must be taken to avoid extravasation during injection. Injecting too quickly may lead to heart-related symptoms, so it should be administered slowly. Additionally, it should not be mixed with specific other components as it may cause precipitation, and syringes disinfected with ethanol should not be used. Prior to administration, the medication should be warmed to body temperature, used immediately after opening, and any remaining medication should be discarded. Lastly, this medication should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
