Precautions

This drug should not be used by women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. This medication should be avoided in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding or mechanical obstruction, as it may stimulate gastrointestinal motility. Patients with pheochromocytoma that may induce hypertension or patients allergic to this medication should also not use it. Administration is prohibited in patients with liver diseases, manic states, or patients in the manic phase of bipolar disorder, and patients with genetic problems like lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with high blood pressure, children, and the elderly should exercise special caution when using this drug, especially children, as extrapyramidal symptoms may easily occur; excessive dosing should be avoided. This medication may affect endocrine function, causing symptoms such as amenorrhea, galactorrhea, or gynecomastia; if any abnormal symptoms appear, use should be discontinued immediately. Rarely, patients may experience motor disorders such as tremors, tongue twisting, or restlessness, and long-term use may lead to involuntary movements around the mouth. Gastrointestinal effects may include dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, while cardiovascular effects may involve hypertension or arrhythmias. Serious side effects may include neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which may manifest as high fever, muscle rigidity, and changes in consciousness; if these occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and professional treatment sought. Other rare side effects may include rash, edema, burning sensations, lethargy, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, imbalance, erectile dysfunction, and changes in libido. Patients taking this medication should avoid activities requiring attention, such as driving or operating machinery. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so careful monitoring is necessary when used with anticholinergics, narcotic analgesics, digitalis preparations, other benzamide medications, psychiatric medications, drugs that prolong the QT interval, or drugs that may cause electrolyte disturbances. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid this medication because safety for the fetus and newborn has not been established, and elderly patients may experience prolonged retention of the drug due to decreased kidney function, necessitating careful dosage adjustments and monitoring for side effects. Finally, since this medication has antiemetic effects, it may mask vomiting symptoms caused by other reasons, so careful observation is needed during use, and animal studies have reported a potential for reproductive function decline and tumor development; caution is advised for long-term usage.
