Reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of mortality from coronary heart disease and non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke in adult patients at high risk for cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, diabetes, peripheral vascular diseases, and stroke. It also reduces associated risks with coronary and non-coronary vascular interventions. Moreover, it lowers total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is used when other therapies are inadequate or alternatives are not possible, and its administration is monitored with regular checks of lipid levels. In children with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who meet specific criteria, it is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. This medication is effectively used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and improve dyslipidemia.
This medication is taken once daily in the evening. The initial starting dose is 20 mg once daily; for patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia, it can start at 10 mg. The dosage can be adjusted within the range of 5 - 40 mg per day based on the initial LDL cholesterol level, treatment goals, and patient response. Certain patient groups have dosage restrictions; for example, in combination with verapamil, diltiazem, or dronedarone
For pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily in the evening. The recommended dosage range is 10 - 40 mg per day, with a maximum dose of
