Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. It is also unsafe for patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation. Administration should be avoided in patients with certain tumors, known allergy to this medication, epilepsy, or bipolar disorder. Patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly should exercise special caution when using this drug. In children, motor disturbances due to the medication may occur, so care should be taken to avoid overdose. Women taking this medication may experience hormone-related side effects such as amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, or gynecomastia. Additionally, neurological side effects such as tremors, tongue tie, and anxiety may occur rarely, and if these symptoms appear, medication should be discontinued immediately. Long-term use may result in involuntary movements around the mouth, which can persist even after stopping the medication. Gastrointestinal side effects may include dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardiovascular side effects such as hypertension or arrhythmia may also occur, requiring caution. When this medication is used for antipsychotic treatment, a serious side effect known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may rarely occur. This condition includes symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, and altered consciousness, requiring immediate discontinuation of the medication and intensive care in a hospital. During treatment, skin rashes, swelling, flushing, fatigue, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, and, rarely, erectile dysfunction may occur. Long-term use can lead to abnormal symptoms due to hormonal changes, but these are mostly reversible. Patients should be informed about the possibility of milk discharge due to an increase in prolactin hormone secretion during treatment, and there should be continuous monitoring for neurological and endocrine side effects. It is also advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. This medication can interact with other drugs, so caution is necessary, especially when taken with anticholinergics, narcotic analgesics, digitalis preparations, other benzamide drugs, psychiatric medications, alcohol, drugs that prolong the QT interval, or drugs that cause electrolyte disturbances. Its safety has not been established for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so dose and administration intervals should be adjusted carefully. Finally, this medication has an antiemetic action and may mask vomiting symptoms due to other conditions, so it should be used cautiously. Animal studies have reported possible reproductive dysfunction and tumor occurrence with long-term high-dose administration.
