Treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers, treatment of esophagitis and heartburn, and improvement of gastric mucosal lesions
This medication treats active gastric and duodenal ulcers and prevents the recurrence of duodenal ulcers. It also alleviates symptoms of erosive and ulcerative esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy and heartburn due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. It improves symptoms such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling of the gastric mucosa, which may occur due to acute exacerbation of acute and chronic gastritis. This efficacy can be effectively used in the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases.
1. Treatment of active gastric and duodenal ulcers Adults: Administer 300 mg of nizatidine once daily at bedtime, or 150 mg twice daily, in the morning and evening, by mouth. Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks, but treatment may be continued for up to 8 weeks if necessary. For active gastric ulcers, malignancy must be ruled out before treatment. 2. Prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcers Adults: After healing of a duodenal ulcer, administer 150 mg orally once daily at bedtime. Treatment may be continued for up to 1 year; outcomes of longer-term treatment are unknown. 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease Adults: Administer 150 mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening. Treatment may be continued for up to 12 weeks. 4. Improvement of gastric mucosal lesions Adults: Administer 150 mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 weeks. 5. Dose adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment The dose for patients with renal impairment should be reduced and adjusted as follows. Creatinine clearance Dose Active duodenal ulcer Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Benign gastric ulcer 20~50 ml/min 150 mg daily < 20 ml/min 150 mg every other day Maintenance therapy 20~50 ml/min 150 mg every other day < 20 ml/min 150 mg every 3 days Some older adults may have a creatinine clearance below 50 mL/min. Based on pharmacokinetic data in patients with renal impairment, the dose should also be reduced in these patients according to the degree of renal impairment. The clinical effects of this dose reduction in patients with renal impairment have not been evaluated.
This drug should not be used by patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or other H2-receptor antagonists. Additionally, this drug contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with genetic problems that prevent the digestion of lactose. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of drug allergies, impaired liver function, or decreased renal function. In particular, patients with impaired renal function should reduce the dosage or increase the interval between doses. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis may occur; if such symptoms appear, the use of the drug should be immediately discontinued. Hematological abnormalities such as anemia or decreased white blood cell count, gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation or diarrhea, and signs of impaired liver function have also been reported, so patients should consult a physician if abnormal symptoms arise. Neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion may also occur rarely, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. This drug may conceal symptoms of gastric cancer; therefore, it should only be used after ruling out the possibility of gastric cancer. Patients with poor renal function may have elevated risk of side effects due to difficulty in drug elimination, so it is advisable to conduct renal function tests and adjust the dosage. The safety of this drug during pregnancy or lactation has not been sufficiently established; it should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks, and in the case of breastfeeding, it is preferable to avoid use if possible. The safety for pediatric use has not been established, and elderly patients may have a higher likelihood of decreased renal function, so renal function tests are recommended before administration. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and miosis may occur, and appropriate medical treatment should be sought immediately. This drug has a low likelihood of serious interactions with other medications, but caution is advised when taken with high doses of aspirin, as it may increase serum salicylate levels.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
