Treatment of hypokalemia and digitalis poisoning
This medication is used to treat hypokalemia, especially hypokalemia that occurs after the use of diuretics. It also helps alleviate symptoms of digitalis poisoning.
For tablets, the therapeutic dose is potassium chloride 1,200 to 3,000 mg per day divided appropriately. For prevention, in patients on diuretics, a dose of 600 mg once daily should be taken immediately after meals without chewing or crushing. For injection, potassium chloride 0.5 to 3 g should be diluted in Ringer's solution, glucose injection, or normal saline injection to a concentration of 0.3% (40 mEq of potassium) or less, administered at a rate not exceeding 8 mL per minute.
Care must be taken when cutting the ampoule as glass shards may be mixed in when using glass ampoules. Extra caution is advised when used in children and the elderly. This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to its components, poor renal function, weakened cardiac function, postoperative heart patients, patients with cardiac hypertrophy, or those with hyperkalemia. Caution is required when using in patients with impaired renal function or heart disease, or in patients with diseases that predispose them to hyperkalemia. When using this medication, symptoms of potassium excess such as numbness in arms or legs, muscle weakness, hypotension, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur, requiring careful observation. Additionally, symptoms such as digestive discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may arise. Regular monitoring of potassium levels and heart condition during administration is important, and administration should be stopped immediately if hyperkalemia is suspected. When used in conjunction with other medications that can increase potassium levels, the risk of hyperkalemia is increased, so caution is advised in such combinations. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication cautiously as its safety has not been established. Elderly individuals may have reduced bodily function, necessitating careful adjustment of medication doses. In cases of overdose, serious hyperkalemia can occur, requiring immediate cessation of administration and appropriate emergency treatment. This medication should only be administered intravenously and must be diluted before use. Administering without dilution may lead to cardiac problems, so it must be diluted according to instructions and administered slowly.
