Treatment of eye infections such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis
This drug is effective against various types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, and penicillin-resistant strains, as well as some streptococci, pneumococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. It is used primarily to treat inflammatory diseases that occur around the eyes and in the eye, such as blepharitis, dacryocystitis, and styes. It is also effective against serious eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulcers. This drug effectively improves inflammation and infection in response to various causative organisms. Therefore, it is very useful for the treatment of bacterial infections related to the eyes.
In cases of mild to moderate infection, instill 1–2 drops into the affected area every 4 hours. In severe infections, instill 2 drops every hour until symptoms improve, gradually tapering off. Adjust as appropriate according to age and symptoms.
This drug is an aminoglycoside antibiotic and should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or similar medications. Symptoms such as itching, swelling, redness, inflammation, and temporary stinging sensation may occur, so the use should be discontinued immediately if these symptoms arise. Occasionally, there may be irritation or pain in the eyes, so caution is needed. To prevent antibiotic resistance, it is advisable to confirm the susceptibility of the infecting bacteria and to use it only for the minimum duration necessary for treatment. It is preferable to have a thorough interview and skin reaction tests before use to prevent allergic reactions or severe side effects. If used for a prolonged period or repeatedly, other resistant bacteria may proliferate excessively, in which case, the administration should be discontinued and appropriate treatment should be sought. The components of this drug should not be used in conjunction with certain antibiotics, so it is essential to consult with a professional before combination with other medications. Additionally, when using systemic administration medications from the same class as this drug, careful observation of blood concentrations is necessary. During treatment, it is advisable to avoid wearing contact lenses to prevent the spread of infection. There may be temporary blurred vision upon instillation, so it is advised to refrain from driving or operating machinery until vision returns to normal. This drug may affect blood coagulation when used with anticoagulants, so blood testing should be performed periodically to monitor the condition and adjust the dosage as needed. During pregnancy, while no teratogenic risk has been reported in animal studies, it should only be used when absolutely necessary. During breastfeeding, side effects may appear in the baby, so breastfeeding should be halted or used only when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as eye inflammation, redness, increased tearing, swelling, and itching may occur; therefore, blood concentrations should be monitored, and treatment such as hemodialysis may be administered as necessary. This drug should not be directly injected into the eyes. Finally, resistance to this drug has been reported in some bacteria, so it is important to use it accurately according to medical professionals' instructions to enhance therapeutic effect.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
