Effectiveness in managing blood sugar levels and improving electrolyte imbalances (hyperkalemia, hypermagnesemia)
This medication is used for patients with chronic renal failure undergoing dialysis who have difficulty managing blood sugar levels, or for those who are not alleviated from hyperkalemia or hypermagnesemia by existing dialysate, or for patients concerned about hypercalcemia. In other words, it helps in managing blood sugar levels and improving electrolyte balance, making dialysis treatment safer and more effective.
Select an appropriate alkaline solution for dialysis based on the patient’s condition and the type of dialysis machine being used, and dilute with this solution and purified water.
This medication should be used with caution in patients with severe liver impairment or severe diabetes. In these patients, the drug may not be metabolized properly, causing symptoms such as hypotension. Additionally, patients taking digitalis preparations should be careful as low serum potassium levels may lead to symptoms of drug toxicity. Hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia may occur during or after dialysis, so it's important to closely monitor blood sugar changes and take appropriate action if abnormalities are detected. If weight gain or increased blood pressure occurs, management may be needed such as adjusting fluid intake or removing fluid from the body through dialysis. Bone diseases such as osteoporosis or osteomalacia may develop due to calcium metabolism disorders, so Vitamin D3 preparations should be administered if necessary. Moreover, the occurrence of ectopic calcification is possible, making it crucial to maintain serum phosphorus levels within normal ranges. Symptoms of dialysis disequilibrium syndrome, such as headache, nausea, and convulsions, may present, so dialysis intensity should be adjusted if such symptoms are observed. Hypotension or shock symptoms may arise as well, necessitating stopping dialysis or administering fluids and antihypertensive agents if symptoms occur. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should use this medication with caution and only when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Safety in children has not been established, necessitating caution in use. Elderly patients may be at risk for bone complications, hence regular monitoring and consideration of Vitamin D3 administration should be made. Safe dialysis dilution water must be used, at the level of purified water, and care should be taken to avoid risks of dialysis membrane rupture or bleeding. During preparation, do not mix with sodium bicarbonate solution, and ensure the dilution concentration is precisely matched; improper concentrations may result in headaches, blood pressure abnormalities, and consciousness disorders. The electrolyte concentration and pH of the dialysis solution must be confirmed before use, and it should be used immediately after dilution. The usage temperature should be maintained around body temperature, and it should not be used for injection or peritoneal perfusion.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from air exposure, preferably at room temperature. It is safer to avoid extremely hot or cold places and keep it in a cool area out of direct sunlight.
