Candidal vulvovaginitis is an inflammatory disease caused by excessive proliferation of Candida fungus in the vagina. This medication is used to alleviate the symptoms of candidal vulvovaginitis and to treat the infection.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Typically, 100 mg of clotrimazole is inserted deeply into the vagina once daily for 6 consecutive nights. For short-term therapy, typically, 200 mg of clotrimazole is inserted deeply into the vagina once daily for 3 consecutive nights at bedtime.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals who have allergies or have experienced hypersensitivity reactions to the active ingredient or any of the excipients. While using this medication, it should not be taken concurrently with certain immunosuppressants such as tacrolimus or sirolimus. Concurrent use may elevate the blood concentrations of these medications, leading to potential side effects; therefore, periodic monitoring of blood levels under a physician’s direction is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before using this medication. Although no specific abnormalities were found in animal studies, it should only be used during pregnancy under a physician's diagnosis and guidance, and it is advisable to avoid using insertion tools while applying the vaginal tablet. Women who are breastfeeding should also consult a physician prior to using this medication. While systemic absorption is low and the likelihood of transfer into breast milk is minimal, it is important to seek professional advice for safety considerations. If any unusual symptoms such as allergic reactions, hypotension, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, skin rash, or abnormal vaginal discharge occur while using this medication, it should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted. It is advisable not to use this medication during menstruation, and it may be necessary to seek additional treatment to ensure complete infection clearance; consultation with a professional is recommended. To prevent reinfection, it is important to maintain personal hygiene by frequently changing towels and underwear and washing them thoroughly.
