Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or by nursing mothers. It should also not be administered to patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation. In particular, it should not be used in patients with chromaffin cell tumors as it may cause hypertension. It should not be given to patients with allergies to this medication or those who cannot tolerate it. Caution is also required for patients with liver disease, manic states, and those in the manic phase of bipolar disorder. Additionally, it should not be used in patients with malignant mammary diseases as it may cause breast-related abnormalities. Patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly should take special precaution when using this medication. Children may exhibit extrapyramidal symptoms more easily, so avoid overdose. The elderly may have decreased kidney function, leading to prolonged drug presence in the body, necessitating dose adjustment and close monitoring. Taking this medication may result in amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, gynecomastia, and other abnormal symptoms; if any side effects occur, discontinuation should occur immediately. Rarely, neurological side effects such as tremor, abnormal tongue movements, and anxiety may arise, and if such symptoms occur, dosing should be stopped. Long-term use may cause involuntary movements around the mouth, which may persist even after the medication is discontinued. Gastrointestinal side effects may include dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardiac issues such as hypertension or arrhythmia may occur, thus caution is necessary. Rarely, a serious condition known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may arise, requiring immediate cessation of the medication and emergency treatment if symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or altered consciousness appear. While taking this medication, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, and lethargy may occur, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating machinery. Furthermore, rare allergic reactions such as rash or swelling may occur, necessitating discontinuation of the medication if these symptoms develop. This medication may interact with other drugs, so caution is necessary especially when taken with anticholinergics, narcotic analgesics, digitalis preparations, other neuroleptics, alcohol, or drugs that prolong the QT interval. It should not be combined with medications that cause electrolyte disturbances. Women who are pregnant or nursing should refrain from using this medication as its safety in relation to the fetus or newborn has not been established. The elderly should be cautious as reduced kidney function may lead to increased drug concentrations, requiring careful monitoring of adverse reactions and adjustment of dose and dosing intervals. This medication has an antiemetic effect, which may mask vomiting symptoms caused by other illnesses, thus careful monitoring of the condition is required during use. Long-term high-dose treatment may also pose a possibility of abnormalities in reproductive organs or tumor development, necessitating caution.
