Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or by nursing mothers. It may be harmful to patients with gastrointestinal issues such as gastrointestinal bleeding or intestinal perforation, so it should not be administered in such cases. Caution is advised for patients with specific tumors such as pheochromocytoma, as it may cause an increase in blood pressure. Patients with allergies to this medication or those who cannot tolerate it should not use it. Patients with liver disease or in a manic phase of bipolar disorder should also avoid this medication. It should be used cautiously in patients with breast diseases. Particular caution should be exercised when administering to patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly. In children, dose adjustment may be necessary as extrapyramidal symptoms could occur. Taking this medication may lead to hormonal-related abnormal symptoms such as amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, and gynecomastia, so careful monitoring is needed. Additionally, neurological side effects such as tremors, abnormal tongue movements, and anxiety may occasionally occur; if any symptoms arise, discontinue the medication immediately. Prolonged use may lead to involuntary movements around the face or mouth, so caution must be exercised. Gastrointestinal side effects may include dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardiovascular side effects such as hypertension or irregular heartbeats may occur. If serious symptoms of malignant neuroleptic syndrome such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or changes in consciousness appear while using this medication, it is imperative to discontinue use immediately and seek emergency treatment. Discontinuation is also necessary if skin rashes or edema occur, and occasional symptoms such as flushing, fatigue, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, and erectile dysfunction may occur. It is advisable to avoid activities requiring concentration such as driving or operating machinery while taking this medication. Especially with high doses, there is a increased risk of cardiac rhythm abnormalities, so patients with heart disease should be especially careful. Patients at risk of stroke should take this medication with caution under medical supervision. Interactions may occur when combined with other drugs, so care should be taken to avoid use with drugs that inhibit gastrointestinal motility, digitalis preparations, psychiatric medications, alcohol, etc. The risk increases when taken with drugs known to cause arrhythmias, hence careful monitoring is required. It is safest for pregnant or nursing women to avoid this medication, as animal studies have reported the risk of harm to the fetus. In elderly patients, renal function may be decreased, leading to prolonged retention of the drug in the body; thus, dosage and intervals should be adjusted while being vigilant for side effects. This medication has the effect of alleviating nausea, which may mask vomiting caused by other reasons, hence accurate diagnosis and monitoring are necessary. Long-term high-dose administration has been reported to carry the risk of reproductive organ atrophy or tumor development; therefore, regular check-ups are necessary during prolonged use.
