Prevention and treatment of epilepsy (absence seizures, partial seizures, etc.) and associated personality and behavioral disorders
This medication is used to prevent and treat various forms of epilepsy seizures, such as absence seizures (petit mal), partial seizures (focal seizures), psychomotor seizures, and mixed seizures. It also aids in the prevention and treatment of personality and behavioral disorders that may occur in patients with epilepsy. This contributes to reducing the frequency of seizures and improves the quality of daily life. This medicine plays an important role in managing epilepsy, helping to alleviate symptoms and stabilize the patient’s life. Patients can expect good results with consistent usage. Therefore, it is used to treat epilepsy and related behavioral disorders.
Adults: Administer 800 ∼ 1,500 mg of magnesium valproate per day orally in 2 ∼ 3 divided doses.
This medication requires special caution in pregnant women. Pregnant women should only use this medication when there are no alternative treatment methods available, and women of childbearing potential must strictly follow effective pregnancy prevention programs. The effectiveness of this medication may be reduced when used with hormonal contraceptives that contain estrogen, so physicians should closely monitor the patient’s condition during the initiation and cessation of such medications. Patients taking antiepileptic drugs are at increased risk for suicidal thoughts or behaviors and mental health issues such as depression; thus, mood and behavioral changes should be closely monitored during treatment. For patients with impaired liver functions or at high risk for liver damage, especially in children under 3 years, this medication should be used alone with regular liver function tests. Symptoms of liver damage include fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and if these symptoms appear, the physician must be notified immediately. This medication can occasionally cause severe pancreatitis, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting occur, prompt medical evaluation is necessary. Regular liver function tests and blood tests should be conducted throughout treatment, and patients with bleeding tendencies should have their coagulation state monitored closely. This medication can interact with various other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, you must inform your healthcare provider, especially when using antidepressants, antibiotics, anticoagulants, etc. It is recommended not to combine alcohol or central nervous system depressants during usage, as drowsiness or sedative effects may occur; thus, driving or operating hazardous machinery should be avoided. Discontinuing this medication suddenly can worsen seizures, so when stopping, it must be tapered off gradually under a doctor’s guidance. Overdose can result in symptoms such as coma, sedation, and muscle weakness, so if suspected, immediate hospital care should be sought. When taking, do not chew or crush the tablets; they should be swallowed with sufficient water, and it is normal for white residue to be excreted, so there is no need to worry. Finally, keep this medication out of the reach of children, and do not transfer it to another container for safety.
