Precautions

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding. It should not be administered to patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation, as this can stimulate gastrointestinal motility. Patients with certain tumors, such as chromaffin cell tumors, should not use this medication as it may cause hypertension. Those with allergies or intolerances to this drug should avoid it. Patients with liver disease or those in the manic phase of bipolar disorder should also refrain from its use. This medication may worsen breast-related issues in patients with malignancies in the breast due to increased prolactin secretion. This drug contains lactose, so it should be avoided by individuals with genetic conditions such as lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly should use this medication with particular caution, with children avoiding overdoses. This drug may cause side effects such as amenorrhea, excessive milk secretion, and gynecomastia; if such symptoms occur, it should be discontinued immediately. Rarely, extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremors, tongue twisting, and agitation may occur, necessitating cessation of the drug if present. Prolonged use may lead to involuntary movements, which could persist even after stopping the drug. Gastrointestinal side effects may include dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Cardiac-related side effects such as hypertension or arrhythmias may occur, requiring monitoring. A severe side effect known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome may arise; if symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or changes in consciousness occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and emergency treatment sought. Rarely, side effects such as rash, swelling, burning sensation, malaise, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, staggering, erectile dysfunction, and changes in libido may occur, thus monitoring for unusual symptoms is advised. It is also advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery while taking this medication. This drug may interact with other medications, particularly anticholinergics, analgesics, digoxin, other benzamide drugs, psychopharmacological medications, drugs that prolong the QT interval, and those that cause electrolyte disturbances. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid this medication for the safety of the fetus and newborn. The elderly should be cautious of increased drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function, adjusting doses and intervals carefully. This drug may mask vomiting symptoms from other conditions due to its antiemetic effect, necessitating close observation. Animal studies have reported risks of reproductive function impairment and tumor occurrence, so caution is needed with long-term use.
