Precautions

This drug should not be administered to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or those who are breastfeeding. Administration should be avoided in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation as gastrointestinal motility stimulation could be harmful. This drug is not used in patients with certain tumors, such as pheochromocytoma, due to the risk of inducing hypertension. Patients who have hypersensitivity or intolerance to this drug should not be treated with it. Patients with liver disease and those in the manic phase of bipolar disorder should also avoid using this drug. Patients with breast disorders should be cautious, as increased prolactin secretion may exacerbate breast problems. Use with caution in patients with hypertension, children, and the elderly, particularly avoiding overdosing in children. This drug can affect endocrine function, leading to symptoms such as amenorrhea, galactorrhea, and gynecomastia; careful monitoring is warranted. Extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremors, tongue twisting, and restlessness may rarely occur, and if these symptoms appear, treatment should be discontinued. Long-term use may result in involuntary movements around the mouth, which may persist even after discontinuation of the drug. Gastrointestinal side effects such as dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation may occur. Cardiac-related side effects such as hypertension or arrhythmia may arise, necessitating caution. Serious side effects known as neuroleptic malignant syndrome have been reported rarely, with symptoms including high fever, muscle rigidity, and altered consciousness; immediate discontinuation and specialist treatment are required. Rash and swelling may occur rarely; if such symptoms appear, the use of the drug should be stopped. It is advised to refrain from driving or operating machinery during treatment. This drug has many drug interactions, requiring caution, especially when taken with alcohol. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid this drug, as safety for the fetus and newborn has not been established. Elderly patients may experience prolonged effects of the drug due to decreased renal function, so dosage and frequency should be adjusted and used with care. This drug exerts antiemetic effects, which may mask vomiting symptoms from other causes, so symptoms should be monitored closely. Animal studies have reported potential effects on reproductive function, indicating caution is necessary with long-term use.
