How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, for adults, 500–1,000mL per day is administered in 2–3 divided dosages via intravenous drip. The administration rate is 250–500mL per hour (60–120 drops per minute), and for the elderly, it is 250mL per hour (60 drops per minute).

Precautions

This medication is an intravenous infusion that contains glucose, which can increase the consumption of thiamine (vitamin B1) in the body and pose a risk of thiamine deficiency. It should not be used in cases of excessive fluid, storage dehydration, low serum potassium, high serum sodium, hyperglycemia, or acidosis. Use with caution in patients with impaired kidney function, weakened heart function, hyperosmolar dehydration, low urine output due to urinary obstruction, high serum chloride levels, and very low serum sodium levels. Rapid or large volume administration of this drug may cause edema in the brain and lungs, peripheral edema, acidosis, or excessive fluid overload in the body. Particularly in newborns or premature infants, rapid administration can lead to side effects due to fluid overload, and thrombosis may occur at the injection site. During administration, blood glucose, serum electrolytes, and fluid status should be regularly monitored to check the condition. During pregnancy, the effects on the fetus are not clearly known, so it should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks, and care should be taken to monitor blood glucose levels for both the mother and newborn during labor. Newborns, especially preterm or low birth weight infants, are at higher risk for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, making careful management of blood glucose essential, and rapid or prolonged administration should be avoided in infants and elderly patients. In cases of overdose, treatment with diuretics may be necessary to expel excessive fluid from the body. Before administration, skin or equipment should be cleaned and disinfected to prevent infection, the solution should be warmed to approximately body temperature, and any unused solution should be discarded immediately after opening. Administer slowly via intravenous infusion, and avoid connecting infusion containers in succession to reduce the risk of air embolism. Store this medication at room temperature, and proper handling and storage are important.
