Summary

Main use
Treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases (ulcers, erosions, etc.) and reflux disease; treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
1. Adults 1) Gastric ulcer: Administer omeprazole 20mg orally once daily. Most cases may heal within 4 weeks, although healing time may vary among patients. If healing is incomplete after the initial 4 weeks of treatment, continue treatment for an additional 4 weeks. In patients who have not responded to other medicines, a dose of 40mg once daily usually results in healing within 8 weeks, although healing time may vary among patients. Repeat treatment if the ulcer recurs. 2) Short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer: Administer 20mg orally once daily. Most cases may heal within 2 weeks, although healing time may vary among patients. If healing is incomplete after the initial 2 weeks of treatment, continue treatment for an additional 2 weeks. In patients who have not responded to other medicines, a dose of 40mg once daily usually results in healing within 4 weeks, although healing time may vary among patients. Repeat treatment if the ulcer recurs. 3) Treatment of reflux esophagitis and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (heartburn, regurgitation, etc.): - Reflux esophagitis: Administer 20mg orally once daily. Repeat treatment if the condition recurs. - Treatment of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (heartburn, regurgitation, etc.): Administer 20mg orally once daily. Treatment for 2~4 weeks is generally sufficient for healing. 4) Maintenance therapy for severe reflux esophagitis and peptic ulcers that are difficult to treat: Administer 20mg orally once daily. If the condition recurs, the dose may be increased to 40mg once daily. 5) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: The initial dose is 60mg orally once daily. Continue treatment, adjusting the dose as appropriate for each patient. More than 90% of patients respond to doses of 20 - 120mg per day. If administering more than 80mg per day, divide the dose into 2 administrations per day. 6) Antibiotic combination therapy to prevent recurrence of duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori: - Dual therapy: Administer this medicine 20mg and amoxicillin 750 - 1000mg together twice daily for 2 weeks. - Triple therapy: Administer this medicine 40mg once daily or 20mg twice daily in combination with the following antibiotics. ① Administer clarithromycin 250mg and metronidazole 400mg twice daily for 1 week, or ② Administer amoxicillin 1g and clarithromycin 500mg twice daily for 1 week. If the treatment effect is insufficient, omeprazole monotherapy may be continued. 7) Treatment of gastric or duodenal ulcers or erosions caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Administer 20mg orally once daily. Most cases may heal within 4 weeks, although healing time may vary among patients. If healing is incomplete after the initial 4 weeks of treatment, continue treatment for an additional 4 weeks. 8) Maintenance therapy to prevent gastric or duodenal ulcers or erosions and dyspeptic symptoms caused by NSAID use in patients receiving long-term NSAID treatment who have a history of gastroduodenal lesions: Administer 20mg orally once daily. 9) Prevention of recurrence of reflux esophagitis: Administer 10mg orally once daily to prevent recurrence of reflux esophagitis. * Swallow this medicine whole with at least half a glass of water. The dose may be adjusted according to age and symptoms.

This medication is used for the short-term treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, helping to alleviate symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also effective as maintenance therapy for severe gastroesophageal reflux disease and difficult-to-treat peptic ulcers. It is used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and is administered in combination with antibiotics to prevent recurrence of duodenal ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. It is effective in treating ulcers or erosions induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and in preventing these ulcers and dyspeptic symptoms in patients on long-term NSAID therapy. Additionally, it is used to prevent the recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are hypersensitive to its ingredients. Caution should be exercised when administering it to patients with gastric ulcers that may have malignant potential, as symptom alleviation may delay diagnosis. It should not be used with certain antiviral agents, and care should be taken as the levels of the drug may be reduced when used in combination with some antiviral medications. Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired liver function or elderly patients due to metabolic changes of the drug, especially in severe liver dysfunction patients who should not exceed the maximum dose. While taking this medication, neurological symptoms such as headaches, drowsiness, and dizziness may occur, and in rare cases, confusion or hallucinations may also arise. Liver function abnormalities may present, so liver enzyme levels should be monitored regularly, and the medication should be discontinued if abnormalities are detected. Gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may commonly occur. Allergic reactions such as skin rash or itching may occur, and in severe cases, the administration should be stopped immediately. Rare systemic allergic reactions such as angioedema, bronchospasm, and anaphylactic shock may occur, so caution is necessary. Cardiac-related symptoms such as chest pain or palpitations may appear; if any unusual symptoms occur, consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Blood abnormalities such as leukopenia or thrombocytopenia have been reported rarely, so regular blood tests may be necessary. Long-term use may increase fracture risk, and therefore the minimum effective dose should be used when needed. Prolonged use beyond three months may lead to hypomagnesemia, necessitating regular monitoring and possible supplementation of magnesium levels. This medication interacts with many other drugs, so patients should inform their healthcare providers of any other ongoing medications. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication. Nursing mothers are advised not to take this medication; if necessary, breastfeeding should be discontinued. Safety in pediatric populations has not been established, thus caution is required when using it in children. Overdose may manifest as vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches, though serious adverse effects have been reported infrequently. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, not stored in a different container, and the lid should be securely closed after use. Long-term administration may increase the risk of infections due to bacterial overgrowth in the stomach, so if diarrhea persists, a consultation with a healthcare professional is required. This medication may inhibit gastric acid secretion, potentially leading to vitamin B12 malabsorption; therefore, caution is needed for long-term use.
