This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in patients over 55 years of age who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease, especially those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack, as well as patients with diabetes at high risk evidenced by signs of end-organ damage. Therefore, this drug is used to manage hypertension while improving cardiovascular health.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Essential Hypertension Take 40 mg of Telmisartan once daily with water, with or without food. In some patients, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases will show maximum blood pressure-lowering effects 4-8 weeks after starting treatment. 2. Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Take this medication once daily.

Precautions

This drug can cause severe harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients with allergies to this drug or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver disease or biliary excretion disorders, patients with hereditary angioedema, and patients with diabetes or severe renal impairment should not take this medication. Caution is advised for elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction, patients with heart valve disease, patients with ischemic heart disease, patients with gastrointestinal disorders, patients with renovascular hypertension, and patients with severe renal impairment. Blood pressure, renal function, and serum potassium levels should be regularly monitored during treatment, especially when this medication is used in combination with other blood pressure medications or potassium supplements. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, cough, dyspepsia, skin rash, angioedema, myalgia, renal function abnormalities, etc. may occur, so if any unusual symptoms arise, consult a healthcare professional immediately. This medication lowers blood pressure, and in the event of hypotension, measures such as laying the patient down and administering fluids may be necessary. It is advisable not to take this medication for 24 hours before surgery, and caution is required when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting. This medication contains sorbitol and is not suitable for patients with fructose intolerance. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid it. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur; therefore, if symptoms arise, seek medical attention immediately. The safety and efficacy for children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established and are not recommended. This drug may enhance the blood-lowering effect when used in combination with other antihypertensive medications, and may interact with specific drugs; therefore, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken.
