Treatment of myasthenia gravis; reversal of the effects of nondepolarizing muscle relaxants
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of myasthenia gravis. Additionally, it is used as an injectable to reverse or antagonize the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants. Therefore, it helps effectively improve the side effects of myasthenia gravis and certain muscle relaxants.
Adults: Administer orally in 3 divided doses, for a total daily dose of 60~180㎎ of pyridostigmine bromide. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals who are allergic to this drug or similar drugs should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function, those who have had peptic ulcers or gastric surgery, diabetic patients, and individuals with liver damage should exercise particular caution when using this medication. Regular liver function tests are recommended during the treatment. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as respiratory muscle paralysis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, excessive sweating, and pupil constriction may appear, requiring immediate cessation of the medication and notification to medical personnel. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, excessive salivation, tears, sweating, increased bronchial secretions, and increased intestinal motility may also occur. There have also been reports of muscle cramps or weakness, headaches, palpitations, tinnitus, and skin rashes. In particular, patients with myasthenia gravis may experience a sudden worsening of symptoms, so it is important to closely monitor any changes in symptoms and take appropriate action based on these observations. As this medication is primarily excreted by the kidneys, individuals with reduced kidney function should adjust their dosage accordingly. Caution is also needed when using this medication in conjunction with others. When taken with certain muscle relaxants, the effect may be intensified, and when combined with anticholinergic agents, the side effects of this medication may be masked. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the benefits outweigh the risks, as its safety has not been established. Women who are breastfeeding should also use this medication only when absolutely necessary and ideally discontinue breastfeeding if possible. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function which could increase drug concentration; therefore, a lower starting dose is advisable with careful monitoring.
