Efficacy & effects

Improvement of hypoalbuminemia in patients with non-target cirrhosis.

  • Hypoalbuminemia
View approved original text

Patients have developed hypoalbuminemia due to non-target cirrhosis despite adequate dietary intake. This medication helps improve hypoalbuminemia, restoring serum albumin levels to normal ranges. This improves the body's protein balance and enhances overall bodily condition. It is particularly useful for patients with impaired liver function and contributes to overall recovery and health improvement. Therefore, this medication effectively alleviates hypoalbuminemia in patients with non-target cirrhosis.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who have congenital disorders affecting branched-chain amino acid metabolism as severe side effects like seizures or respiratory distress may occur. Additionally, since this medication contains lactose, it should not be administered to patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Such patients may be unable to properly digest lactose, posing a health risk. When taking this medication, gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating or discomfort, and nausea may occur. In such cases, it is advisable to reduce the dosage or temporarily discontinue use. This medication may affect renal function, potentially leading to an increase in BUN levels in blood tests; if any abnormalities are found, dosage adjustments should be made. Occasionally, metabolic abnormalities may occur, leading to elevated blood ammonia levels; in such instances, dosage should be reduced or discontinued. There have also been reports of increased liver function test results, skin rashes, itching, facial or limb swelling, fatigue, and facial flushing as side effects. This medication is primarily used for cirrhosis patients with low serum albumin levels and ascites or edema, but it should not be used in cases of severe hepatic encephalopathy or in patients with severely impaired liver function, as it may be ineffective or risky. This medication contains only branched-chain amino acids and does not provide all necessary amino acids, so patients should consume adequate protein and calories from food. Particularly, patients who require protein restriction should be careful to avoid worsening their nutritional status. Long-term excessive dosages may lead to elevated blood BUN and ammonia levels, so the dosage and duration of use should be carefully managed. If symptoms do not improve after 2 months of use, alternative treatment options should be considered. Elderly patients may have reduced bodily functions, increasing the risk of metabolic abnormalities, so they should be monitored more closely when using this medication. Women who are pregnant or nursing should only use this medication when the benefits outweigh potential risks, as its safety has not been established. Safety in pediatric patients has not been confirmed; therefore, it is advisable not to use this medication in children. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers may pose a risk of accidents and degradation of quality, so caution is advised. Finally, this medication contains aspartame, which has been confirmed to be carcinogenic in animal studies, so long-term use may be harmful to health.
