Treatment of electrolyte imbalances such as hyponatremia through electrolyte and fluid supply.
This medication is used to quickly replenish electrolytes and fluids in the body. It is particularly effective in cases of electrolyte imbalances such as hyponatremia or hypochloremia. It is also used when excessive amounts of water have been ingested due to repeated enemas or when extracellular fluid has been rapidly diluted during transurethral prostatectomy. Additionally, it aids in emergency treatment during severe salt depletion. It is effective in improving electrolyte and fluid imbalances in various conditions.
Administer a dosage determined by theoretical needs as sodium chloride at a slow intravenous infusion rate of 100 mL per hour or less, and do not exceed 400 mL in 24 hours. Dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted based on age, weight, and symptoms. Fluid and electrolyte balance should be monitored during administration.
When using this medication for injection, be very careful when cutting the ampoule, as glass shards may mix in. Special caution should be taken when administering to children and the elderly. It is recommended not to administer this medication to patients with high, normal, or slightly low electrolyte levels in the plasma. Moreover, use should be avoided in situations where the administration of sodium and chloride may be harmful. Administration should be done with caution in patients with heart or circulatory problems, kidney diseases, low protein levels, cirrhosis, edema, conditions of excess blood volume or urinary obstruction, patients taking corticosteroids or corticotropin, salt retention patients, children, elderly individuals, and post-surgical patients. Rapid or excessive administration of this medication can lead to heart failure, edema, acidosis, and serum electrolyte abnormalities. Additionally, symptoms such as fever, tissue damage, pain or infection at the injection site, phlebitis, thrombosis, and blood volume overload may occur. Following surgery, symptoms such as cellular dehydration, weakness, confusion, appetite loss, nausea, abdominal distension, shortness of breath, decreased urine output, and elevation in blood test values may occur. If adverse reactions occur, immediately stop administration, assess the patient's condition, and provide appropriate treatment. During treatment, fluid and electrolyte balance and acid-base balance should be periodically monitored, and the patient's condition should be closely observed. It is advisable not to administer excessive electrolytes, minerals, or vitamins during this time. Safety has not been established for pregnant women; therefore, this medication should only be used when the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Additionally, it is unknown whether this medication is secreted in breast milk, so it should be administered to breastfeeding women with caution. In case of overdose, symptoms such as anxiety, weakness, thirst, dry mouth, tongue swelling, skin flushing, fever, dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal distension, deep breathing, loss of appetite, local pain, fever, extravasation, blood volume overload, serum electrolyte abnormalities, acidosis, oliguria, elevated BUN, venous irritation, venous thrombosis, abscess, injection site infection, and injection site pain may appear. Elevated blood levels of sodium and chloride due to excessive dosing can lead to acidosis, so if symptoms appear, the patient's condition should be re-evaluated immediately and appropriate measures taken. When mixing this medication with other additives, carefully check the turbidity or precipitation of the mixture before and during administration, and avoid using plastic containers as connecting tubes. It is recommended to change intravenous infusion devices every 24 hours. Only use solutions that are transparent and in unblemished containers or packaging.
Congestive heart failure, edema.
