View approved original text

This medication is used to supplement the necessary fluids and electrolytes during dehydration or before and after surgery. It also plays a role in supplying the energy required by the body. Therefore, it is effective in alleviating the symptoms caused by dehydration and in aiding recovery after surgery. By maintaining electrolyte balance and providing energy, this drug stabilizes the body's condition. It helps improve fluid and electrolyte imbalance.

How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, for adults, 500-1,000mL daily is administered in 2-3 divided doses through slow intravenous infusion. The infusion rate is 250-500mL per hour (60-120 drops per minute), and for elderly patients, it is 250mL per hour (60 drops per minute).

Child administration

For infants and young children, administer 15-60mL per hour (4-15 drops per minute).

Precautions

This medication contains dextrose, which can rapidly increase the consumption of thiamine (vitamin B1) in the body when administered intravenously. Caution is needed due to the risk of thiamine deficiency. This medication should not be administered to patients with excessive fluid, hypertonic dehydration, hypokalemia, or hypernatremia. It must be used with caution in patients with renal impairment, heart failure, hypertonic dehydration, reduced urine output due to urinary obstruction, diabetes, hyperchloremia, and those with low sodium levels in the blood. Rapid or large-volume administration of this medication may lead to serious side effects such as cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, peripheral edema, acidosis, or water intoxication. Special caution is necessary when rapidly administering to newborns or premature infants due to the high risk of water intoxication. Thrombosis may occur at the intravenous injection site, so monitoring is required. Blood glucose levels, electrolyte concentrations in the blood, and fluid balance should be routinely checked for abnormalities. The container of this medication is made from PVC material containing a plasticizer called DEHP, which is known to potentially affect reproductive development in animal studies. However, the risk associated with not using this medication is greater than the risks from DEHP exposure, so avoidance is not necessary. During pregnancy, effects on the fetus are not fully established, so this medication should only be administered when the therapeutic benefit outweighs the risk. Administering glucose solutions during labor may cause blood glucose irregularities in both the mother and newborn, so a careful consideration of benefits and risks is necessary. Special attention is needed for newborns, preterm infants, and low-birth-weight infants due to difficulties in blood glucose control, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. In infants and the elderly, rapid or prolonged administration should be avoided, and extra caution should be exercised in elderly patients with heart failure or renal failure to reduce circulatory burden. In case of overdose, treatment to remove excessive fluids may be required using diuretics. Prior to administration, the patient's skin and instruments should be disinfected to prevent infections, and in cold conditions, the medication should be warmed to body temperature before use. It should be used immediately after opening, and any remaining solution should be discarded. During administration, it should be infused slowly intravenously. To prevent air embolism, continuous connection between containers should be avoided. This medication should be stored at room temperature, and proper storage and handling are essential.
