This medication is used to prevent and treat vitamin B6 deficiency. It is particularly effective in cases where vitamin B6 levels have decreased due to drug administration. It is also beneficial in situations where the requirement for vitamin B6 is increased and cannot be met through diet alone, such as in cases of wasting disease, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and for those taking estrogen preparations. It is also used in hematological conditions such as vitamin B6 dependency and vitamin B6-responsive anemia. Additionally, it is effective in improving various diseases related to vitamin B6 deficiency or metabolic disorders, such as oral inflammation, eczema, and peripheral neuropathy. Overall, this medication is used to treat various vitamin B6 deficiencies and related conditions.

How to take

Adult dose

As pyridoxine hydrochloride, adults should take 10 to 100 mg per day. In cases of vitamin B6 dependency, higher doses may be administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients allergic to this drug or its components. Additionally, it should not be taken by patients who are on levodopa. This drug contains lactose, so patients with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. This medication should be used with caution in patients receiving treatment from a doctor or those taking medications that increase vitamin B6 requirements. Taking this medication may cause increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, nausea, headaches, and drowsiness. Long-term high-dose use may lead to neurological issues; symptoms may gradually improve after stopping the medication, but recovery may take time. Particularly in newborns and infants, high doses may lead to severe side effects such as muscle damage and kidney impairment; therefore, if unusual symptoms occur, treatment should be stopped immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. This medication must be taken according to the prescribed dosage and regimen; if symptoms do not improve or worsen after about a month of use, consult with a doctor or pharmacist. High-dose use during pregnancy may affect the newborn, so caution is needed. This medication may reduce the effectiveness of levodopa when taken together, so they should not be used concurrently. Additionally, concomitant use with isoniazid, penicillamine, or oral contraceptives may increase the requirement for vitamin B6. During pregnancy, high-dose use should be avoided, and when administering to newborns or infants, the initial dose should be small, and increased slowly. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place. It is safest to keep it sealed in its original container.
