This medication is primarily used for the treatment of patients with Type 2 diabetes whose blood glucose control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone. It is especially effective when used alone or in combination with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin in overweight adults. It can also be used in children over 10 years old and adolescents in growth, either as monotherapy or in combination with insulin. This drug helps effectively control blood sugar, aiding in diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 500mg 2-3 times a day with meals. The dosage should be determined based on individual drug effects and tolerance, with a maximum daily dosage of 2550mg. For dosages up to 2000mg, it is usually divided into two doses, morning and evening, and when exceeding 2000mg, it should be divided into three doses with meals.

Precautions

This drug may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is advised. Patients with moderate or severe kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or acute conditions such as acute myocardial infarction should not be administered this medication. Patients with acute or unstable heart failure, those scheduled for tests using specific radiocontrast agents, and patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or similar medications should also avoid administration. Patients with Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe infections, or severe traumatic systemic disorders, and those scheduled for surgery should temporarily discontinue or avoid this drug as well. Caution is required for malnourished patients, those with liver dysfunction, severe respiratory dysfunction, or excessive alcohol intake. This drug contains lactose and should not be used in patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. Irregular eating habits, inadequate food intake, strenuous exercise, or interactions with other medications may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, so careful administration is needed. The most serious side effect of this drug is lactic acidosis, which is very rare but can be fatal and is associated with decreased kidney function, cardiopulmonary diseases, and sepsis. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may commonly occur, and taking this medication with food or gradually increasing the dosage can help alleviate these symptoms during the initial treatment. Kidney function and vitamin B12 levels must be regularly monitored through blood tests while taking this drug, especially in elderly or patients with decreased kidney function. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects associated with this drug, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking it. During pregnancy, this drug may affect the fetus, so pregnant women should consult their doctor before taking it, and the same caution applies to nursing mothers. This drug can interact with several medications, so patients taking other drugs must inform their doctor or pharmacist. In case of overdose, blood dialysis may be necessary, so patients should visit a medical facility immediately if overdose is suspected. Finally, this drug should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety reasons.
