Polymyxin B sulfate and neomycin sulfate are used primarily for the treatment of conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis caused by susceptible bacteria. This medication effectively improves infections around the eyes and in the eyeball, reducing inflammation and aiding in healing. By acting directly on the infected area to eliminate bacteria, it helps alleviate symptoms. Thus, this medication is very useful for the treatment of eye-related infectious diseases.

How to apply drops

Adult eye dose

Polus Eye Drops: Instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac 4-6 times a day. In severe cases, instill every hour until inflammation subsides before gradually tapering off. Ointment: Apply a small amount into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times a day or use together with eye drops at bedtime.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with certain eye conditions. For example, it should not be administered to patients with viral keratitis or conjunctivitis, mycobacterial or fungal infections, tuberculosis infections, newborns, corneal damage or ulcers, and those with allergies to this medication. Caution is needed when using this medication in glaucoma patients, especially in cases of closed-angle and open-angle glaucoma where it should be administered cautiously. This medication contains antimicrobial and steroid components, which may cause allergic reactions. In cases where the cornea or sclera is thin, there is a risk of perforation. Furthermore, intraocular pressure may increase, and if used for long periods, it can lead to optic nerve damage or vision loss. The steroid component suppresses immune responses, potentially leading to secondary infections or fungal infections of the cornea and may delay wound healing. When there is acute inflammation in the eye, there is a risk of exacerbating the infection. Temporary irritation symptoms such as discomfort in the eye, tearing, burning sensation, and corneal hyperemia may occur during use, and rarely blurred vision may develop. Contact lens wearers must remove their lenses while using this medication, and if used for more than 10 days, they should continuously undergo intraocular pressure tests. Even if symptoms improve, the medication should be used consistently for a certain period to prevent relapse, but the total usage period should not exceed 14 days. If symptoms do not improve after 7-8 days of use, discontinue use and consider alternative treatment options. This medication, containing both steroids and antimicrobials, carries a risk of secondary infections, thus suspicion of fungal infection should arise if persistent corneal ulcers appear. Infection with chickenpox or measles while using this medication can be very dangerous, so it is essential to check for a history of chickenpox or measles and vaccination status before use. If there is no history, every effort should be made to prevent infection, and immediate medical consultation should be sought if infection is suspected. Vision disorders have been reported with the use of systemic or topical corticosteroids, so if blurred vision or vision loss symptoms occur, consultation with an ophthalmologist is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits when using this medication, and if breastfeeding, it should be avoided or nursing should be stopped since it is unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk. This medication should only be used for direct eye instillation, and care should be taken to avoid direct contact of the container opening with the eye. When using with other eye drops, they should be administered at intervals of 15 minutes, and it is advisable to avoid shared use to prevent contamination. When stored, keep it out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place. To maintain quality, it should not be transferred to other containers.
