This medication is used for the treatment of Candida vaginitis, Trichomonas vaginitis, and vaginitis caused by nonspecific and mixed infections. It is also used for pre-treatment in gynecological surgery, effective for antiseptic vaginal cleansing, local washing, and deodorization. It helps improve various issues related to vaginitis.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Dilute 30 mL of 10% povidone-iodine solution (with 1% effective iodine) in approximately 1L of warm water for cleansing inside and outside the vagina once or twice daily. For antiseptic vaginal cleansing, local washing, and deodorization, cleanse once or twice a week.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with known allergies to this drug or its ingredients. It is advisable not to use this medication in patients with thyroid dysfunction, especially those with conditions such as nodular goiter or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or renal failure, and in newborns or infants under 6 months of age. Do not administer in cases of herpetic dermatitis or prior to or after receiving radioactive iodine treatment. Caution should be exercised in severely ill patients or those with a history of thyroid disease and renal failure. Allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing or hives may occur during use; if such symptoms arise, discontinue use immediately. Localized pain, itching, rash, irritation, etc., may occur; if symptoms worsen, cease usage. Excessive use may cause electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, or renal failure. Long-term use may lead to changes in thyroid function and affect serum thyroid hormone levels. Overuse may result in a metallic taste or burning sensation in the throat and mouth, eye irritation or swelling, diarrhea, and difficulty breathing. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication extensively or for prolonged periods, as it may affect the thyroid function of the fetus or newborn. This medication may interfere with thyroid function test results; thus, this should be considered during testing. In case of overdose, symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and coma may occur; immediate medical attention is required. Avoid contact with eyes and wash thoroughly with clean water if it gets into the eyes. Do not mix with other medications, and ensure to clean and disinfect the area before use. Clothing that has been contaminated with this medication should be washed immediately, and soaps may reduce the effectiveness of this medication, so rinse thoroughly before use. Store away from direct sunlight, and avoid storing in metal containers as corrosion may occur. This medication may weaken latex products, so it is advisable not to use it along with condoms or intra-vaginal contraceptive devices. Seek medical attention immediately if serious symptoms such as sudden itching, swelling, chest tightness, pale complexion, cold sweat, or shortness of breath appear during use.

Serious side effects

Hives, severe swelling (edema), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, anaphylactic symptoms, iodine allergy, severe rashes on the skin, blisters, skin ulcers, pain in the mouth/eyes, difficulty breathing, pulmonary edema, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), extreme lethargy, renal failure, kidney bleeding, anuria, severe edema accompanied by increased blood pressure, sudden and severe headache, confusion, visual disturbances.

Mild side effects

Pain, itching, irritation, rash, reddening, dermatitis, burning sensation, skin ulcers, contact dermatitis, skin discoloration, impaired wound healing, electrolyte and serum osmolality disturbances, metabolic acidosis, changes in thyroid function, metallic taste, increased salivation, burning sensation and pain in the throat and mouth, eye irritation and swelling, skin reactions, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, excessive tension, tachycardia, cyanosis, headache, dizziness, confusion.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Interactions

Drug interactions

Do not use this medication together with hydrogen peroxide. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if using it in conjunction with lithium, chlorhexidine, sulfanilamide, silver compounds, alkaline preparations, or wound healing agents containing enzymes.

Storage

This medication may be sensitive to light; therefore, it should be stored in a container that blocks light. Additionally, store in an airtight container that does not allow for airflow, maintaining storage temperatures at room temperature, which is generally a normal indoor temperature that is not too hot or too cold.
