How it is given

Adult administration

For the average adult, 500–1,000mL is administered per day in 2–3 divided doses via intravenous drip infusion. The administration rate is 250–500mL per hour (60–120 drops per minute), and for the elderly, it should be administered at 250mL per hour (60 drops per minute).

Precautions

This medication contains glucose, which may increase the consumption of thiamine (Vitamin B1) during intravenous administration. Therefore, caution should be exercised due to the risk of sudden severe thiamine deficiency. This medication should not be administered to patients with excess fluids. It should also be avoided in patients with storage dehydration, low blood potassium levels, or high blood sodium levels. It should be administered carefully in patients with specific health conditions such as renal impairment, heart failure, or hypertonic dehydration. Diabetic patients or those with electrolyte imbalances also require caution. Rapid large doses of this medication may lead to serious side effects such as cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, peripheral edema, acidosis, and water intoxication. Particularly in neonates and premature infants, rapid administration increases the risk of water intoxication. During administration, blood glucose, serum electrolytes, and fluid balance should be regularly monitored for abnormalities. Safety of this medication during pregnancy or lactation, in children, and in the elderly has not been fully established, so it should only be used when the benefits of treatment are determined to outweigh the risks. Particularly during labor, special attention should be given to the blood glucose control of the mother and fetus, with monitoring to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia in the newborn. In cases of overdose, treatments such as diuretics may be required to regulate fluid levels in the body. Before administration, the infection status of the patient should be confirmed, and the skin and injection equipment should be thoroughly disinfected. Additionally, in cold weather, the medication should be warmed to body temperature for use, and any remaining medication after opening should not be used immediately. When injecting, it should be administered slowly intravenously, ensuring that air does not enter the container to prevent air embolism. This medication should be stored at room temperature, keeping it sealed to prevent air or moisture ingress, ensuring a suitable environment to maintain its efficacy.
