Auxiliary effect in ophthalmic surgeries (cataract, corneal transplant, glaucoma)

View approved original text

This medication is used effectively as an auxiliary in various ophthalmic surgeries, including lens implantation during cataract surgery, corneal transplant surgery, and glaucoma surgery.

How it is given

Adult administration

1. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation: Slowly inject the required amount of this medication into the anterior chamber of the eye through a needle or cannula before or after lens removal. To achieve optimal endothelial protective effects as an auxiliary, it should be injected before cataract extraction and intraocular lens insertion. This medication can be used for coating surgical instruments and the intraocular lens to be inserted. 2. Corneal

Precautions

This medication contains sodium hyaluronate as the main ingredient and is used during ophthalmic surgeries. It should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to this drug's ingredients or protein-based drugs. When used in the eyes, intraocular pressure may increase, and rare side effects such as inflammation, corneal edema, clouding, bleeding, pain, itching, and blurred vision may occur. There is also a possibility of clouding forming on the surface of the intraocular lens. This medication contains phosphates, so caution is needed as there is a very rare risk of corneal calcification in patients with severe corneal damage. It is essential to use the specified method and the supplied cannula; using another cannula can cause separation and serious trauma. General precautions related to anterior segment surgery should be strictly followed, and particularly after surgery, intraocular pressure should be checked thoroughly, and appropriate measures should be taken in case of increased intraocular pressure. It is advisable to rinse or aspirate this medication after surgery to remove it as much as possible. Before performing ultrasonic emulsification and aspiration surgery, a space filled with perfusion fluid should be created between the lens and this medication through aspirational perfusion. Surgical instruments should not be cleaned with solutions containing quaternary ammonium compounds like benzalkonium chloride. Sodium hyaluronate is produced through microbial fermentation and purification processes, but it may cause allergies in sensitive patients, so caution is advised. Cannulas should not be reused and should only be used when the solution is clear. During use, care should be taken not to create air bubbles, and if the container is damaged, it should not be used. This medication should not be used in combination with hyaluronidase; therefore, co-administration should be avoided. This medication is for ophthalmic use only and must never be injected intra-vascularly. Before use, medication that has been stored in the refrigerator should be left at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Care must be taken as precipitates can form upon contact with benzalkonium chloride or chlorhexidine. Once opened, it should be used only once, and any remaining medication should be discarded with the container. When using, care should be taken that air does not enter under the iris and injection should be performed slowly and carefully. Care should be taken not to over-inject into the anterior segment, as excessive injection may cause increased intraocular pressure. Store this medication out of the reach of children, avoiding direct sunlight, and in a cool place. It is important for quality preservation and to prevent misuse not to transfer it to another container.

Mild side effects

Increased intraocular pressure, inflammatory reactions, corneal edema, corneal clouding, anterior bleeding, iris neovascularization, posterior iris ulcer, conjunctival adhesion deficiency, mydriasis, lens clouding, pain, itching, blurred vision, corneal functional impairment, clouding of the surface of the intraocular lens, corneal calcification

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air and light, and the temperature should be kept between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius in a cool place. In other words, it is crucial to store it safely in a dark area of the refrigerator.
