This medication is used to relieve inflammation and improve symptoms of ulcerative colitis occurring in the rectum and sigmoid colon.

Dosage

Administer 1 time daily for 4 weeks through the rectum before bedtime. The patient should lie on their left side to administer the medication through the anus into the rectum and remain in that position for 5 minutes after administration. It is preferable to keep the medication in the administration area for as long as possible, ideally overnight.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with systemic or local bacterial, fungal, or viral infections due to the potential deterioration of the infection. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or any of its components should not use it. Caution is required for patients with active tuberculosis or herpes simplex keratitis as symptoms may worsen. Patients with acute psychosis or those who have recently undergone intestinal surgery may have compromised wound healing, so caution is needed. Patients with abscesses or purulent inflammation, as well as those with intestinal obstruction or perforation, should also use this medication with caution. When transitioning from systemic corticosteroid therapy to this medication, care must be taken regarding adrenal function recovery. Patients with liver dysfunction or hypothyroidism may experience enhanced drug effects, so vigilance is required. Patients with peptic ulcers or diverticulitis may experience worsened symptoms due to decreased mucosal protective function. Patients with osteoporosis should be cautious as their bones may become weaker. Careful use is also required for patients with acute glomerulonephritis, myasthenia gravis, dermatitis, thrombophlebitis, mental disorders, diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, acute coronary disease, and severe ulcerative colitis. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, infants, toddlers, and children require special attention. This medication may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal bloating, nausea, diarrhea, and skin reactions such as hives, rashes, and itching. Moreover, central nervous system side effects such as insomnia, agitation, anxiety, depression, and drowsiness may occur. Symptoms of blurred vision may rarely occur; if there are changes in vision, medical consultation should be sought immediately. Long-term or high-dose use may lead to decreased adrenal function, weight gain, increased blood sugar, osteoporosis, increased infection risk, gastric ulcers, skin and muscle atrophy, hirsutism, elevated blood pressure, and mental disorders. When switching from systemic corticosteroid therapy to this medication, careful monitoring of adrenal cortex function is crucial. During drug tapering, symptoms like muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, headache, nausea, and vomiting may occur. Additionally, allergic reactions may recur during the use of this medication, and antihistamines or topical agents may be used if necessary. Patients with impaired liver function require careful monitoring as it may affect drug metabolism. This medication can mask infection symptoms and may lead to new infections, so the status of infections must be closely monitored. Patients in an immunosuppressed state, particularly children, are at high risk for chickenpox or measles, which can have serious consequences, necessitating special attention in prevention and management. If exposed to chickenpox or measles, immediate medical consultation should be sought to receive appropriate preventive measures. This medication and certain antifungals or antibiotics may influence drug metabolism, potentially increasing blood concentrations, so caution is needed when used together. During pregnancy, special care must be taken to avoid use unless absolutely necessary due to potential effects on the fetus, and caution is needed during breastfeeding as it is unclear if the drug transfers into breast milk. Experience in the use of this medication in children is limited, so it should be administered with caution. Elderly patients adhere to adult dosage without special dose adjustments.
