Treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease primarily occurring in the hip and knee joints, characterized by gradual damage to the cartilage of the joints and the occurrence of inflammation. This leads to symptoms such as pain, limited range of motion, and joint stiffness. Patients may experience discomfort in daily life; therefore, proper treatment and management are necessary for symptom relief. This medication is used to reduce joint pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis and to improve joint function.
Adults: Administer 50∼100mg of diacerein orally in 1∼2 divided doses after meals. Adjust the dose appropriately according to symptoms. For patients with a history of loose stools or diarrhea, an initial dose of 50mg once daily for the first 2-4 weeks is recommended, followed by 50mg twice daily.
This medication should not be administered to patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This includes conditions such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Additionally, patients with intestinal obstruction syndrome should not take this medication. It should also not be used in patients with unexplained abdominal pain. This medication is not intended for use in children under 15 years of age. Furthermore, patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication. Patients with a history of small intestine or colon diseases should use this medication cautiously and decide whether to administer it according to a doctor's judgment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should exercise caution when taking this medication. Older adults over 65 are recommended to reduce the dosage. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, loose stools, and abdominal pain may occur when taking this medication. Long-term use may lead to serious side effects such as gastric bleeding, ulcers, or perforation, so care must be taken. If diarrhea becomes severe, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance may arise, and patients should consult a doctor immediately if symptoms occur. Skin reactions like itching, rash, and eczema may occur. Liver function may be affected, and there may be a rise in liver enzyme levels. Long-term use should strictly follow a doctor's directions, and if diarrhea occurs, medication should be discontinued and medical advice sought. This medication can burden the liver, so signs of liver damage should be closely monitored, and additional caution is needed when taken with other medications that can cause liver damage. Additionally, limiting alcohol consumption during this medication period is advisable. Taking antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, or salt alongside this medication may interfere with its absorption, so it is best to space them at least 2 hours apart. Taking diuretics with this medication may enhance diuretic effects and pose risks of dehydration and hypokalemia. Furthermore, caution is necessary when taken with cardiac glycosides due to an increased risk of arrhythmias. It is preferable for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication, as animal studies have reported delays in fetal bone formation, and there is insufficient data on its effects on humans, with small amounts being excreted in breast milk. In the case of overdose, severe diarrhea may occur, possibly requiring treatment such as electrolyte replenishment. If an overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention is necessary.
