Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Hypertension: The initial adult dose is 50mg of atenolol taken orally once daily, alone or in combination with a diuretic (thiazide), and if effectiveness is not observed within 1-2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 100mg taken once daily. Do not exceed 100mg per day. Angina: Take 100mg daily divided into 1-2 doses, not exceeding 100mg per day. Renal impairment patients: Creatinine clearance

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions to the main ingredient or additives. It is contraindicated in patients with severe bronchial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Patients experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis or metabolic acidosis should also avoid this medication. It should not be administered to patients with bradycardia or cardiac conduction disorders, cardiogenic shock patients, or those with severe heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension. Additionally, patients with severe hypotension or peripheral circulatory disorders, as well as those with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, should not use this medication. Patients at risk for developing thyrotoxicosis due to thyroid dysfunction, or those with untreated pheochromocytoma should also avoid this medication. This medication contains lactose, thus should not be taken by patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic lactose metabolism disorders. Patients at risk of bronchial asthma or bronchospasm should use this medication with caution and may need to use a bronchodilator as necessary. Patients with congestive heart failure should observe their condition carefully when taking this medication. Patients with diabetes or hypoglycemia should take this medication carefully while closely monitoring blood glucose changes. Patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction also require caution. Elderly patients should start at a lower dose and closely monitor their condition. Long-term use of this medication requires regular monitoring of heart function, blood pressure, and electrocardiograms, and doses should be reduced or stopped if abnormalities are found. Abrupt discontinuation of this medication can worsen symptoms of heart disease, thus it should be tapered off according to a doctor's instructions. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 24 hours before the procedure and caution should be observed during anesthesia as well. Dizziness can occur during the use of this medication, so driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. Moreover, this medication may interact with several other drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication cautiously as it may affect the fetus or newborn, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding if possible. The safety of this medication in children has not been established, thus it should be used cautiously in pediatric patients. In case of overdose, severe bradycardia, hypotension, and bronchospasm may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention.
