Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients who have allergic reactions to this drug or any of its components. Additionally, this drug contains lactose, so patients with hereditary galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication. Patients with chronic active hepatitis or liver cirrhosis should be particularly cautious when using this medication. This drug contains a pigment known as Yellow No. 5, so patients with allergies or hypersensitivity to this component should also use caution. When taking this medication, side effects such as dry mouth, nausea, and skin rashes may occur, and these symptoms may improve with the use of allergy treatment medications. Transient jaundice symptoms may occur; in such cases, stopping the medication or using jaundice treatment medications can alleviate the symptoms. Occasionally, nausea or abdominal bloating may occur, but these typically resolve over time. Results from a 6-year study conducted domestically show that swelling occurred rarely, but a direct correlation with this medication is not certain. Using this medication in conjunction with another medication called inosine may improve elevations in ALT, which is one of the liver function test values. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and women who are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Elderly patients may have decreased physical function; therefore, they should take care to reduce the dosage when using this medication. While it is rare for ALT levels to rise again during the course of taking this medication, stopping the medication may lead to an increase in ALT, but it improves upon resumption of use. This medication should be stored in a safe place out of the reach of children, in its original container with the cap tightly closed. Transferring the drug to another container may risk incorrect usage or compromise the quality of the medication.
