Treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris
This medication is used for hypertension and angina pectoris.
Hypertension: The initial dose for adults is 50 mg of atenolol once daily, either alone or in combination with a diuretic. If no effect is observed within 1-2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily, not exceeding 100 mg per day. Angina pectoris: 100 mg once daily, divided into 1-2 doses, not exceeding 100 mg per day. Patients with renal impairment: For creatinine clearance of 15-35 mL/min/1.73 m², 50 mg once daily.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those who are allergic to the main ingredient or additives of this medication, those with severe asthma or lung diseases, patients with severe bradycardia (very slow heart rate) or cardiac conduction disorders, and those with severe hypotension or heart failure may be at risk if they take this medication. Additionally, this medication should be avoided in patients with metabolic acidosis such as diabetic ketoacidosis or those with thyroid function abnormalities. Caution is also necessary in the case of untreated endocrine diseases. While administering this medication, patients who may develop asthma or bronchospasm, those at risk for heart failure, diabetic patients experiencing difficulty in blood sugar control, patients with significantly reduced liver or kidney function, and the elderly should be observed particularly closely and used with caution. During the course of treatment with this medication, side effects such as rash, itching, dry eyes or decreased vision, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, fatigue, indigestion, and shortness of breath may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately. For long-term use, regular checks of heart function, blood pressure, liver, and kidney function should be conducted to ensure there are no abnormalities, and sudden discontinuation of the medication may worsen cardiac symptoms, so the dosage should be gradually reduced as directed by a physician. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 24 hours prior to surgery, and it is safer to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery during the initial use or if dizziness occurs. This medication may interact with other medications, so if you are currently taking any medications, be sure to inform your physician or pharmacist, especially when used with blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, calcium channel blockers, or anesthetics. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a physician before taking this medication, as it may affect the fetus or newborn, and discontinuing breastfeeding is recommended if possible. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, so caution is needed, and elderly patients should start with a low dose and closely monitor their condition. In case of overdose, symptoms such as decreased heart rate, hypotension, shortness of breath, and hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention, and in severe cases, specialized treatment may be needed in a hospital. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored away from high temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius. Additionally, care should be taken not to transfer it to other containers.
