Improvement of gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric mucosal lesions (erosion, bleeding, etc.) and alleviation of excessive gastric acid symptoms
This medication is used for the treatment of ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also aids in the prevention of Mendelson's syndrome prior to surgery and in the treatment of postoperative ulcers. It is effective for ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to improve gastric mucosal lesions, such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling during acute exacerbations of acute and chronic gastritis. It is also applied in the treatment of peptic ulcers accompanied by upper gastrointestinal bleeding, acute stress ulcers, and acute gastric mucosal lesions. It helps alleviate symptoms of heartburn or acid regurgitation, thereby improving excessive gastric acid issues.
Adults take 150 mg orally twice daily, in the morning and at bedtime. For gastric and duodenal ulcers, the dosage is 150 mg once or 300 mg once at bedtime daily. For patients with duodenal ulcers, 300 mg orally twice daily may be given. For patients with recurrent ulcers, a maintenance dose of 150 mg at bedtime daily is advised. For gastroesophageal reflux disease, treatment lasts for 8 weeks.
Children aged 8 to 18 years may receive 150 mg (2 mg per kg of body weight) up to twice daily. For those aged 12 and older, the dose for excessive gastric acid, heartburn, and acid regurgitation symptoms is 75 mg once
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients allergic to this drug or its components should not take it. Patients with a history of acute porphyria, which is a rare disorder, should also not use this drug. Additionally, this medication contains lactose; therefore, patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. For patients with poor kidney function, this medication may remain in the body longer and increase concentration, so dosage should be reduced or the dosing interval should be extended for careful use. Patients with weak liver function, a history of drug allergies, and elderly patients should also use this medication with caution. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should have their condition regularly monitored, especially elderly patients or those with a history of peptic ulcers. This medication may mask symptoms of gastric cancer; thus, patients over middle age with gastric ulcers or new or changing dyspeptic symptoms should confirm malignancy before taking it. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infections in their stomach or duodenal ulcers need to undergo eradication treatment. Though rare, this medication can cause serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock, necessitating immediate discontinuation and appropriate treatment if adverse symptoms occur during administration. Allergic symptoms such as urticaria, rash, shortness of breath, and hypotension may also appear, so caution is necessary. Blood test abnormalities may occur, and if symptoms like fatigue, bleeding, or fever arise, the hospital should be notified immediately. Temporary liver function impairment may manifest, so if jaundice or hepatitis symptoms appear, medication should be discontinued. Gastrointestinal symptoms like arrhythmia, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain have been reported, while neurological symptoms such as dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, confusion, and insomnia may also occur. Especially, patients with reduced kidney function or the elderly should be more vigilant to these symptoms. This medication has been rarely associated with various adverse effects such as gynecomastia, erectile dysfunction, myalgia, and skin rashes, so any unusual symptoms should be discussed with healthcare providers. During treatment, regular tests for blood, liver, and kidney function should occur; if symptoms do not improve, alternate treatment methods should be considered. Elderly patients or those with chronic illnesses may have an increased risk of pneumonia and should be cautious; if dizziness or drowsiness occurs, driving or handling hazardous machinery should be avoided. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if there are any other medications being taken, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. Co-administration with anticoagulants such as warfarin requires careful monitoring of blood clotting status. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant need to consider the benefits and risks of administering this medication cautiously. Nursing mothers should only take it when necessary, as it may be passed through breast milk. Safety in children has not been thoroughly established, so caution is advised for their use. Keep this medication out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container may compromise its quality. In case of overdose, specific symptoms of poisoning are rare, but emergency measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary. This medication reduces gastric acid secretion, which can promote bacterial growth in the stomach; therefore, regular check-ups, including eye exams, are recommended with long-term use.
