This medication is used to replenish body fluids and electrolytes in cases of dehydration or before and after surgery. It also helps provide necessary energy. Through this action, it helps maintain the body's balance and supports health recovery.

How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, 500 to 1,000 mL is administered as a slow intravenous infusion for adults. The infusion rate should not exceed 0.5 g of glucose per kg of body weight per hour. The dosage and infusion rate should be adjusted appropriately according to age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication is an injectable solution that contains glucose, potassium, and sodium, which can affect blood sugar and electrolyte levels. Since it contains glucose, it may cause a deficiency in vitamin B1 (thiamine), hence special caution is needed for patients receiving glucose infusion. Allergic reactions may occur; if symptoms of allergy appear, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment sought. As it contains potassium, there is a risk of hyperkalemia, so patients with impaired kidney function or heart disease should be particularly careful, and serum potassium levels should be monitored frequently. Blood sugar may rise rapidly due to glucose infusion, so patients with diabetes or those needing blood sugar control should closely monitor their blood sugar levels. Due to sodium and chloride components, hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, metabolic acidosis, etc., may occur; therefore, patients with related diseases or those at high risk should exercise caution. There is a risk of hyponatremia, especially in children, the elderly, and post-surgical patients, so serum sodium levels should be checked regularly. Fluid overload may occur, so dosage and speed should be adjusted, and patients with heart failure or lung disease should be cautious. In severe malnutrition patients, refeeding syndrome may occur, so nutrition should be supplied slowly with monitoring. Administration should be avoided in certain patient groups including those with hyperkalemia, fluid overload, and hyperglycemia; and should be used cautiously in patients with kidney impairment or heart failure. Blood sugar, electrolyte, and fluid status should be regularly checked, and it is necessary to inform about any medications being taken due to the possibility of drug interactions. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, newborns, children, and the elderly require more careful management at the time of administration. In case of overdose, administration should be stopped immediately, and proper emergency treatment, such as controlling serum potassium levels, should be provided. Compliance with urine output and infusion speed is needed during administration, and care should be taken to prevent air embolism at connection points.
