How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, adults receive 500–1,000 mL as an intravenous drip infusion. The rate of administration should not exceed 0.5 g of glucose per kg of body weight per hour. The dosage and infusion rate should be appropriately adjusted based on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication is an intravenous solution containing glucose, potassium, and sodium. Patients receiving this medication are at risk of thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, so caution is advised. When using this medication, allergic reactions or hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis may occur, so if symptoms arise, the injection must be stopped immediately. Due to the potassium content, there is a risk of hyperkalemia, so patients with poor kidney function or heart disease should be especially cautious. Diabetic patients or those having difficulty controlling blood sugar levels should frequently monitor their blood sugar, as this medication can increase blood sugar levels. Due to sodium and chloride components, hypernatremia or hyperchloremia may occur, so patients with related conditions or risks should avoid using this medication or use it with caution. In addition, patients at high risk of hyponatremia, especially children, the elderly, and post-surgical patients, must closely monitor serum sodium concentrations when administering this medication. This medication can cause fluid overload, so patients with heart failure or at risk of fluid retention should adjust the dosage and speed of administration while monitoring their condition. In severely malnourished patients, refeeding syndrome may occur, so nutritional support should be given slowly and observed carefully. This medication should not be administered to patients with hyperkalemia, hypernatremia, hyperglycemia, or those with hypersensitivity reactions to this medication. Patients with reduced kidney function or heart failure should use this medication cautiously and frequently check blood tests and fluid status. Overdose of this medication can lead to complications such as brain edema, pulmonary edema, and heart problems; therefore, it is essential to adhere to the dosage and speed of administration, and if any abnormal symptoms arise, inform the healthcare provider immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, newborns, children, and the elderly need special attention while administering this medication and should closely monitor blood sugar and electrolyte levels as needed. Finally, if taking other specific medications, interactions may occur, so inform the healthcare provider about any medications being taken.
