View approved original text

This medication is used to replenish fluid and electrolyte deficiency that may occur due to dehydration or before and after surgery. It also serves to supply necessary energy to the body. Therefore, it helps to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body and facilitates energy supply for recovery.

How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, adults receive 500–1,000 mL via drip intravenous infusion at a rate of 300–500 mL per hour (75–120 drops per minute).

Child administration

For children, the administration rate should be 50–100 mL per hour. Particularly, rapid infusion (over 100 mL per hour) should not be done for newborns or premature infants.

Precautions

This medication contains glucose, which may lead to a rapid increase in the consumption of vitamin B1 (thiamine) during intravenous injection. Therefore, there is a risk of severe vitamin B1 deficiency occurring. This medication should not be used in patients with excessive fluid, storage-type dehydration, and those with low potassium levels in the blood. Caution is advised when using this medication in patients with impaired kidney function, heart failure, those with hyperosmotic dehydration, patients with reduced urine output due to urinary obstruction, diabetics, and those with high serum chloride levels. Administration in large amounts or at a rapid rate may cause edema in the brain or lungs, peripheral edema, acidosis, and excessive fluid status in the body. Particular care is required for infants or premature infants as rapid administration may lead to fluid overload. There is also a possibility of thrombosis at the site of administration. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels, serum electrolytes, and fluid status in the body is necessary to ensure no abnormalities occur. The storage container of this medication is made from PVC material containing a plasticizer called DEHP, which has been reported to potentially affect the reproductive organs in animal studies. However, the amount that may be exposed to the human body is very small, so there is no cause for concern, as the risks of not using this medication are greater. During pregnancy, it should be used only when absolutely necessary, taking into account the potential risks to the fetus, and caution should be exercised during administration at delivery, as both mother and newborn are at risk for hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Special attention is required for newborns, premature infants, and low-birth-weight infants, as blood sugar control is challenging, and they may be at risk for hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Hypoglycemia can cause seizures or brain damage, and hyperglycemia is associated with various complications. Extra caution should be taken with infants and the elderly to avoid rapid or prolonged administration, and in the elderly, particularly those with heart or kidney failure, careful measures should be taken to reduce cardiovascular burden. In cases of overdose, diuretics should be used to manage body fluid levels. Prior to administration, the patient's skin and the administration apparatus should be thoroughly disinfected, and in cold weather, the medication should be warmed to a temperature closer to body temperature. After opening, it should be used immediately, and any leftover medication should be discarded. This medication should be administered slowly by intravenous injection, and to reduce the risk of air embolism, it should not be used by connecting containers continuously.
