Efficacy & effects

Assistance effect for gastric and duodenal X-ray imaging

View approved original text

This medication is used as an imaging aid during fluoroscopy of the stomach and duodenum. It helps to accurately confirm the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract through fluoroscopy, providing significant assistance for diagnosis.

How to take

Adult dose

At the start of fluoroscopy, just before or immediately after the administration of the contrast agent, usually 1.0 to 1.5 g is given orally with a small amount of water or contrast agent. It should be adjusted appropriately based on the physician's judgment.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with perforations of the gastrointestinal tract or suspected perforations, as the perforation site may enlarge or abdominal pain may intensify. Patients with acute bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract should also not be administered this medication, as there is a risk of worsening the bleeding site. It is advisable not to administer this medication to patients on a sodium-restricted diet. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients with or suspected of having fistulas in the gastrointestinal tract, as the fistula site may enlarge. Patients with or suspected of having gastrointestinal strictures or obstructions should also be observed carefully, as there is a risk of deteriorating the stricture or obstruction site. In patients at risk of gastrointestinal perforation, such as those with gastric or duodenal ulcers, diverticulitis, parasitic infections, or following tissue biopsy, this medication should be administered with caution. Patients with severe general weakness also require careful observation. Taking this medication may cause symptoms such as abdominal distension or belching. As carbon dioxide produced in the gastrointestinal tract can rapidly increase pressure within the tract, caution should be taken in patients suspected of gastrointestinal inflammation or bleeding, as symptoms may worsen. Additionally, due to increased gastrointestinal pressure, there have been reports of temporary hypotension, so blood pressure changes should be closely monitored during administration. For pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, safety has not been established, and it should only be administered when the diagnostic benefits outweigh the risks. There is limited experience in children, and safety has not been established; therefore, it should only be administered when the diagnostic benefits outweigh the risks, as an X-ray examination is necessary after administration of this medication. Elderly patients may have decreased gastrointestinal motility, so caution is necessary when using this medication, including dosage adjustments. Considering that about 130 milliliters of carbon dioxide is generated per gram of this medication, the dosage and the amount of gas produced should be appropriately adjusted. Lastly, this medication absorbs moisture readily, so care should be taken to avoid moisture exposure during storage.
